When we look at facebook and most social media it has become more 'where I have been' than 'what I have seen'.

This changes many aspects of photography (this being my opinion).

I was struck by this while reading an article on the BBC about the Mona Lisa. There was an accompanying video (I did not play it) but the photo showed folks taking picture of themselves with the painting in the background. 'I was there! Awesome!'

What do you think?

It doesn't do much for me. But, who am I?

The upcoming generation was brought up on the internet, with no secrets or social boundaries, and the media pushing to one up each other.

Selfies then, are just a way of saying Look At Me, This Is My Thing. They aren't wrong as much as they aren't right. Just a thing they do. S-

Did not say it was wrong.. Just that it changes photography as most here (I may assume too much here) experience it.

From what I know, most people aren't taking photos for the art, but more like a social postcard saying Look At Me. S-

...'Social Postcard.' I'm going to have to remember that!!!

VS 'Look at what I did (with my camera)'.

You are probably right.

I need to get along with the program then... :hunf:

Damned, I just remembered that I do not want to be in pictures... Over nearly 33 years my wife may have a handful of these and frowning ones at that!!!

99.9% of the photographs I take are of me behind the camera.

The selfie generation is upon us.

Selfie sticks have made it dangerous to walk in areas infested by tourists. Recent years have seen the western U.S. National Parks invaded by Asian tourists; particularly in September. They must issue them Selfie sticks as they climb on their tour busses.

I don't think this is anything new, actually. Walk into any house and look at the photos on the wall or in their albums. I think you'll find that people have been taking photos of themselves in front of places or things almost since the dawn of photography. (The Japanese seem to be particularly adept at this) It's just that we get to see these photos more easily and in greater abundance since everyone posts their pictures in public instead of just in their own homes.

I think you have too much idle time and not enough intellect to productively put it to use.

I had the good fortune to view the Mona Lisa in an exhibit at the NYC Metropolitan Museum of Art and have no photos of it either by itself or with me in the foreground. I carry the memory of that viewing in my mind all these years later and don't in the least need a selfie to remind me that I'd been there. But then, I'm old ....
