Zhouzhuang is known as the Venice of China. The water throughout the canals is quite nasty but life goes on there like it has for a thousand years and more. It really is a vibrant and interesting place in spite of the bad pollution.

BTW, have you been to Venice in the summer? The water(and the whole town)reeks there as well. I sure wouldn't swim in it.

Yes, I was in Venice when the water was about two feet deep across all of St.Marks Square. Dogs were swimming.
