Please.............
What is Photo Shop and what does it do for the photo?

How much does it cost or is it free?

Can someone show me a basic photo without Photo Shop and then same photo, with Photo Shop applied?

All responses are much appreciated.

Thank You,
A.J.

Photoshop is the Cadillac of editing programs. You will pay dearly for it and spend the rest of your life learning all the features.

It doesn't make images look better especially if you don't know how to use it effectively.

AJ, I'm the least 'learned' on this discussion group. But, I was distracted by the sign in the first photo. So, I took it out in the least expensive version of Photoshop (Elements). Looks like I forgot to keep the colors as beautiful as they were in the original photo. I learning. :-(

Cost to much, STEEP learning curve, Not user friendly.

I would second that, though I prefer the old pre-Corel version.

Thank you, I see the sign is gone in the second picture.
Can you fix the photo back up to show the vividness of the beautiful leaves and still delete the sign? Does it cost extra money to redo the picture?

Thank you again.

Photo Shop as a generic term is often used incorrectly to describe the process of editing (manipulating) photo files for a variety of corrections or effects.

That's the improper and widely misunderstood aspect of the term, "to Photo Shop" an image.

Photo Shop (the program) is created and published by Adobe Systems.

It is, as related to other Post processing programs the most expensive of the lot and takes years to become totally efficient in it's use. If there was a University of Photo Shop (UPS), it would likely be a four year degree issuing institution. There would very likely be a Masters program called Photoshop MS (More of the Same), and a PSPHD Program called Photoshop Piled Higher and Deeper.

Please don't begin to think that I am joking here. I am as serious as a Heart Attack (Which Photo Shop could give you one of)

There are tons of programs to edit and manipulate photos.

I used them until I had my heart attack. I no longer shoot RAW, nor do I do Post Processing (or to put it wrong, Photo Shop any images)!

Judging by your question, you are about to embark on the second level of your digital photography journey... Fixing your photographs in the computer.

When I quit shooting RAW and doing Post Processing at the time of my heart attack, I made it my mission to only buy camera's that gave me finished images within the capacity of the camera, rather than spend the other half of my time on the computer. The quest and capture of the image is my goal... not the thousands of hours spent in front of the computer.

I have been a computer consultant, builder, tech for close to 30 years. I do not wish my pleasure time to be spent in front of computers. I'm too advanced and good for that.

So, Photo Shop away if you must, or sign up for and learn to use Photo Shop (the program) and spend both the time and the money as well.

Example of something that can be done in post processing. The second is the original image, from UHH member Bob Yankle.

Thank you, I never realized that Photo Shop could be so involved, (although you did give me a smile at first.)

Thanks again,

Looking at both images, the first one is better.

Thank you Mike, that is much appreciated.

I add this:

You seem to have an oversimplified understanding of what photo editing consists of.

You have repeatedly used the phrase, "please show me an image without an editing program applied, and one with the program applied".

This is errant thinking.

In an editing program, you learn that programs tools and effects to slowly process the image to your desire.

You do not simply apply the program to the picture. You may make a half dozen adjustments using various tools, or you may make 200 to 300 simple adjustments with the tools and effects to get the final image rendition that satisfies you.

Some of the programs do have one simple AUTO ADJUSTMENT that will apply the publishers choice of a handful of adjustments, often not creating a final image that you approve.

I would encourage you to go back to those who showed you a before and after photo. The question you should ask is whether they used a simple one step Auto Adjust, or whether they used multiple tools/effects for the after shot.

Naturally, I am putting you on a bit when I say you may make as many as 200 to 300 separate adustment to get the final image you approve of. However, believe me when I say I have read more than a few articles about photographers who have used that many separate adjustments in their work. Or, should we call them graphic illustrators?? ;-)

I don't mean to scare you off, but many have fallen to the addiction of Post Processing. My heart warned me where I was headed. Be good to yourself. Decide what you want to do in camera, and what you want to do in computer???? :P
