The first photo is the line up to my left, and a similar one was on my right! The sun was only up a minute or two before all birds flew out. Hundreds of snow geese flew to this pool from a different one in the refuge and before landing they did their swirling/circling pattern - that swirling/circling was going both both directions simultaneously at what seemed like dozens of levels from the birds landing to up very high in the sky. It was spectacular!! I was so awe struck I forgot all about my camera and was just totally tranced!

Great photos. The BDA is a wonderful place. We were there just a couple weeks ago and I plane to go again to look for Raptors this month.

Very nice set!!!
I was there in January and spent 2 days. The best shots I got were right there at the pond you have in your 1st image, not even in the main park area.
It's a great place.
If you haven't been there yet....try Bernardo. A little closer to ABQ and when I was there last weekend there were thousands of cranes. Hundreds in the air most of the time.

I will be going back to BDA this coming Jan. ..(hope it's not as cold as my last trip)

They are awesome to see close up in the yard, but they are also awesome to see in huge migratory flocks. We went to the "Crane Festival" in southern Colorado one bitterly cold spring weekend - it was amazing. And in New Mexico they have a hunting season for them (at least they used to). People say they "taste like turkey". "Buy a turkey, then" is what I say.

Thanks for the responses! Great to know these magnificent creatures have lot of admirers all over the country! What's not to love? They are huge, mate for life, wildly dance to impress their partner, sound jurassic, take no shame nor embarassment when they look ridiculous with their landing gear down...would we all do so well.

They really do look silly when they are coming in for a landing. Like a man doing the broad jump wearing stilts.
