I have read recently here in UHH that some of the 7D Mark II cameras have had focusing issues. I am considering buying a refurbished 7D Mark II from Canon. Does anyone know if this problem has been corrected and buying refurbished from Canon is a good thing?

Normally when a camera is listed as refurbished, Canon,Nikon,Pentax, Olympus, Fuji, et al have taken it to the service and repair facility and fixed everything that was wrong with said camera. Buying refurbished is as good as buying new, just cheaper since it is being resold not the initial sale.

The focus issues tended to be in the first shipped models. That was about this time a year ago in late 2014. Anything available today refurbished by Canon or total new will not have those issues.

I bought a 7DII from B&H when they first came out. It had focus issues. Sent it back. B&H replaced it with another new one that actually had a lower serial number. It's been fine. There doesn't seem to have been any particular pattern to the problem, and Canon seems to have taken care of the matter some time ago. I wouldn't be concerned about it if buying a new or factory refurbished 7DII at this point.

Make sure you include taxes in your pricing. I was considering refurbished and Canon raised the price $100, to $1,099. For a couple hundred dollars more, Adorama has a pro bundle (~$250 in value) that made sense to me, and I will use most of the accessories. Look at this URL. I also own the Tamron 150-600mm lens, and I e-mailed them and they said there should not be any focus issues, if so I can send the lens in under there 6 year warranty plan. I should have mine by Friday. Gary http://www.adorama.com/ICA7DM2B.html

I am dealing with Canon today to try to place an order. This has been less than a stellar experience. I have been trying to place an order since Saturday a week ago. I should know by noon today if I am going to go with Canon.

Good luck, it should be easy to order on their website. I just looked and they show out of stock today. Best of luck. I cannot speak for Canon products, but every piece of refurbished equipment I have purchased from Nikon has worked out very well. On each, you could not tell the difference from new, but for the packaging. All is restored to original factory specs and mostly all have very low shutter actuations ( in the case of bodies). The great thing about Canon is they give a year warranty, which is just as if you purchased a new product. I always look at refurbished first to save dollars. Good luck!

I have a Canon 7D Mark II. As was mentioned the early AF problems were addressed in firmware updates., the most current one being 1.05. Also be aware that the AF system in the Canon 7D II is an advanced professional level system. As such it does take time and effort to learn it and master it, especially for sports, action and wildlife. Many of the problems people have is a result of not taking to time to learn and understand the complexities of the 7 focusing modes, and the 6 user adjustable focus tracking cases in AI Servo.

I recently purchased my first refurbished camera directly from Canon (7D Mark II). As far as physical appearance you would not know it was not brand new. Not a scratch or ding on it. It had 3,450 shutters actuations. Since this camera is rated at 200,000 actuations that is less than 2%, so I can live with that. Were it 34,500 actuations I would probably have sent it back.

I will say, however, I am having initial focusing issues as well as many pics seeming darker than my former Canon 60D at the same settings. With that said, at this point in time since I have not put in sufficient time to learn the ins and outs of this camera, it is likely user error.

This camera has great potential. I simply have not lived up to that potential to current date. I am sure I will have future things to say once I have gotten over the learning curve hump.

Before you bite the bullet for a refurb from Canon, consider the price of new from B&H (www.bhphotovideo.com) and other discount retailers. As far as I know, B&H does not charge sales tax for shipments sent outside New York state, and many of their items include free shipping. When you consider the cost of a refurb from a manufacturer plus the sales tax plus the shipping (if applicable), it's often very little more to buy new from B&H or a similar retailer.

I appreciate everyone's response. My concern with Canon is this: I have been trying to buy this camera since Saturday of last week. I have spoken with 4 different customer service agents plus one supervisor about the issues that I am having. My order was pending until I spoke with a supervisor on Saturday. Within an hour of my conversation with this supervisor my order was canceled. I called back to find out why the order was canceled. I spoke with yet another customer service agent. He replaced the order but told me that I would have to wait until I hear from him on Monday (today) at 11:45 EDT. to make sure that I would get the price that I was quoted last week.

I am reaching out to UHH to see if this camera is worth all of the hassle that I am going through with Canon.

Thanks again

B&H has the 7D Mark II for $1399, including a Pixma printer and a $350 rebate. This brings the price down to $1049 for a new camera and the printer.

If I was the OP I would grab this deal today. It won't last long. I purchased my Canon 7D Mark II, body only, in June for $1499. This deal is $450 less than that, and you get a printer included. With a price that low, refurbs can not compete.

A referee is better in manny ways in that a tech has gone over it to see if it is working. A new one comes off the line and is packed assuming it is good.
