My 5DS Arrived - Initial Impressions

I bought the discount this past weekend on the 5DS from Adorama. It arrived yesterday and I took two initial shots in my studio using my Canon 24-105L that I have read is not a particularly good lens choice for this camera. I have yet to try my 85mm 1.8 and 100mm 2.8 Macro, but they are listed as better choices than the 24-105. If that's true I expect to be very pleased with this camera. I will try my Tamron 150-600mm for grins, but I don't expect tack sharp results. I am thinking about adding a Canon 24-70 because it is reviewed with this camera as being a top choice. I won't be ordering that for a while I expect. One painful bill at a time.

Re the two photos attached...I did crop them a bit and made very minor adjustments to the RAW files in ACR. The camera was set to ISO 100, 1/125th, f/11, and the focal lengths were 82mm and 100mm. I used Alien Bees strobes to light the shot. I don't expect anyone to be wowed by these pictures, but for the first couple of shots out of the camera, I had to smile a little.

I bought this camera mostly for commercial product shots and for portraits.

I have been very interested in this camera.... But, it troubles me to hear that some of Canon's lenses are not "perfectly matched" for the camera. Especially any of the L lenses.

I am also interested in the crop application. I see this as a plus. Since this camera provides such large files, the crop factor may not affect the the final image, even after a post processing crop! Case in point.... You are shooting portraits and with the crop factor utilized, the AF points fall closer into the "rule of thirds" realm. With the 6D, when I focus and re-position, the actual distance to subject changes and with the 85mm f/1.8, in an F/1.8 setting, this can impact sharpness.

Please keep us posted on your findings!!!

This feline isn't often impressed by anything but where to sleep and when's dinner. She recently lost her best friend, a 100 lb white German shepherd, so she has compensated by becoming an excellent lap-warmer.

I have a client who wants her project completed. Then I'll find some time to research the cropping feature among other things. I'll let you know what happens, but I suspect it will be an often used feature.

I'm not sure what I'm doing with the "store original" thing, but I'll try. Let me know what you find interesting, if anything. I apologize in advance if I do something wrong here.

I appreciate your comment. I hope your are right about my future efforts. My immediate issue is to determine if the glass I already own will be adequate or if I need to step up the levels. I'm a bit suspicious of the criticism being leveled on all but the most expensive lenses. Then there are those who would criticize anything made by Canon, or so it seems. Ultimately, I will be grateful for critical comments of my work and suggestions for improvement. The equipment is but a tool to accomplish the goal.
