Hi all,
Purchased a Nikon wired cable release. Plugged it into camera port on my Nikon D 5100. Set up the camera on my tripod, focused on my subject, pushed the button but nothing happened. No matter what I have tried there is absolutely no response from the camera.
Any of you UHHers have any ideas or suggestions?

I'd say return it, but if it helps anyone diagnose this -

MC-DC2 Remote Release Cord (1 meter) http://www.nikonusa.com/en/nikon-products/product/remote-cords/mc-dc2-remote-release-cord-(1-meter).html

What model release cord did you buy? Another poster mentioned the Nikon MC-DC2 but a cursory look at the compatible cameras listed in the link provided seems NOT to include your D5100.

It was a Nikon MC-DC2. It was the type that has a push button and a sliding lock for Bulb setting.

According to my information it is compatible with the D5100.

From the owners manual:

The D5100 is equipped with an accessory terminal for
MC-DC2 remote cords and GP-1 GPS units, which connect with
the 4 mark on the connector aligned with the 2 next
to the accessory terminal (close the connector cover
when the terminal is not in use).

Yes. Return it. There are so many inexpensive wireless radio releases available there is little point in having any cable releases.

Is that necessary with a wired release? If so, how?

Interesting. It's not necessary with a Fuji S3 Pro or Nikon Df.

On my 5200 its just plug in and use it, no need to tell the camera anything. works great and it was $4.00 on ebay.
I also bought a wireless remote made by nikon
for $5.00 on ebay. The wireless you have to change settings in the camera to get it to work.
then on ebay I bought another wireless remote, its name on the front said FOR Nikon , I paid $1. for it shipping included and it works great for a buck.

Page 28 of D5100 manual says you have to set it in menu.
