I am considering a new camera purchase. I currently have a Sony A100 DSLR with 2 Sony lens and a Sony Flash. I know it's an antique and anything I buy will be an upgrade. I like the Nikon D7200 but I also like the Sony A77II which would let me use my current lens' and flash unit. Any A77II owners out there? I know the Nikon is a great camera! My main shots will be my Daughter rowing for Crew and watersports behind a ski boat. I like nature scenes too.

Geo,
I'm a Sony owner, too! I have some legacy (FF) prime lenses as well as a couple of zooms that are designed for APS-C sensors. I since have had my A100 converted to "color Infrared," but also own the A55 dSLT model. If you can wait a few months, Sony will be debuting cameras that are the next-gen to some current models and then some.

I don't know if a direct successor to the A77 II is planned, but its new "little brother" has already debuted elsewhere in the world (which you can read up on.) it's called the A68 and incorporates some features from the A77 II. There will be two new A-mount Full Frame cameras, the successor to the A99 and a less expensive (~<$2000 I heard,) entry-level version. There will also be a successor to the a6000 E-mt camera.

Hope this helps you,
lev29 8-)

HI thanks for the update on the newest models coming out soon. It's tough to keep up with them but I guess that's what sells cameras. I'll do some digging on the 68model.

You must click "Quote Reply" so we will know whom you are addressing. If
it's me, I like it very much, but haven't gotten use to it. I much prefer to
use my D7000, easier to handle and focus. The pictures from my 7100 are
just a tad off and I think it is because of camera shake, more pronounced
in a 24 mp camera than a 16 mp camera.

Hi Thanks for the input on the D7100. I am used to the Sony with the anti shake feature built into the camera body. My A100 antique is only around 10 meg so I know what you mean. I guess I'm just feeling the need to update a bit, but my a100 still works great.

I currently own both the Nikon D7100 and the Sony A77II. Both are great cameras. It is the purpose of your shots that will determine which one to go with. The Sony can shot at 10-12 frames a second at full 24 mg. the D7100 is not as fast. With that said the camera, in my opinion, that shuts both these cameras down is the Nikon D750, which I also own. Because I shot wildlife a lot, I use group auto focus on the D750 and in this mode the D750 outperforms both the Nikon D7100 and the Sony A77II. The articulated screen on the A77II moves in more directions than even the D750. However, in my opinion, the Sony A77II might be a good fit for you because you already own two Sony lenses. In addition, the electronic viewfinder on the Sony A77II is a great feature, in manual mode, as you move your shutter speed or f stops you will see in the viewfinder exactly what the final shot will look like. On the Nikon it will only show you how far under of over you are on the scale but will not show you how dark or light your final shot will look like. Look up all cameras and compare the features. Just so you know currently the Nikon D750, D7100, and Sony A77II are on sale. Good luck and happy holidays. I think your current sony flash will not work on the A77II, I believe their may be an adapter for it however.

The Nikon D7200 is a great camera - great sensor and a very wide selection of cheaper legacy lenses if needed.

The Sony A77II is also a great camera - great sensor ( not quite as good as the nikon), a decent selection of legacy lenses ( some can be hard to find though since the lack of popularity with older Minolta lenses when new). The newer Sony lenses are mixed a bag and the really good ones are expensive ! The Sony has in camera Clear Image Zoom, HDR, sweep pano, and low light multiple exposure modes - and 8-12 frames a second !

Hello!

Click on THIS LINK: http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-352598-1.html

...to see the discussion already underway about your camera choices.

I had the A77 and up to that point it was the BEST crop sensor camera I have owned. Now the A77II is MUCH better, and it is one of the best cameras of either format that I have owned.

You WILL be able to use your lenses, but will need to buy an adapter to use that flash on the A77II. The adapters range from about $10 for a cheapo knockoff to about $36 for a real Sony adapter. I have both and both work well with the Sony adapter "feeling" more durable and sturdy on the camera.

The Nikon is a great camera with the best image quality of any APS-C camera available. But the features of the A77II make it PERFECT for your intended use, and the image quality it produces is second only to the D7200 so you aren't suffering on that count.

Body only, the Sony is much cheaper than the Nikon, but with lenses the prices are about the same.

As stated earlier, for YOUR desired shooting, the A77II would be the better fit all the way around.

I think if you use the live view feature on the D7100 as you move the settings the image will reflect the changes. I have the D810 and it does exactly that. I would think the D7100 in Live View would do the same.

That may be true but on the Sony A77II and not Nikon you can look through the viewfinder and see the changes which, as we all know, is preferable to looking at the screen outside which will not give you the true picture because of the glare. So, again, the Sony A77II is superior because of this function IN MANUAL MODE.

I use the Sony A77m2. It is a great camera. I needed to get an adaptor for the flash when I upgraded from the Sony A500. Works great.

You will be overwhelmed by the menu choices on the A77m2 and with time you will get used to it.
