A literary quote that works for photography

I was looking up something and came across this quote by a favorite author that I'd never seen before.

“Each book should be a new beginning where he (the author) tries again for something that is beyond attainment.” Ernest Hemingway

This resonated very strongly with a lengthy "self discussion" I've been having on photography. Just substitute image for "book" and Photographer for "he / author".

Thought I'd pass it along.

This is what I realised about shooting landscapes: you can go back to the same spot and correct any previous errors. You can go at a different time or season and gain a different impression. Often simply by returning you get a better picture. Is that too much work for a single image?
Beats spending your hours on a computer.

Every photograph should be a new beginning where the photographer tries again for something that is beyond attainment.
Pretty much describes the problem. Even a technically perfect photo leaves room for a viewer to change something more to their liking. Pleasing everyone IS beyond attainment. ;

Therefore making the pursuit endlessly interesting or incredibly frustrating depending on mindset. The thought of an art / craft where I have the opportunity for limitless improvement...I will never be bored. In the final analysis, my images only have to please me!

Indeed. I have said many times photography is "a lifetime pursuit" - there is always something new to learn and explore and maybe even master but the perfect photo is always (or nearly always) just just out of reach. ;)

Purportedly Navajo rug weavers always left a small "error" in every rug because the Gods dislike perfection.. but sometimes we can come, in engineering terms, close enough! All the best!

Or not -- Capa used one Leica with a 5cm lens, and after that, I think an Exacta with the equivalent lens. It is fun to have many toys, though!

Not quite yet, though we are much colder than is being forecast in what is supposed to be a "Mild" winter due to El Nino!

Depends on what you're trying to capture. That fleeting random moment is just that. It's capture is unique and therein precious. It cannot be visited again. It's like that old phrase "Let's do that again." You can't do anything again. You can do something similar. (Courtesy Brother Dave Gardner, comedian).
