still learning B&W conversion, using Silver Effex. Thoughts?
Both photographs look good in the download format and the conversion to Black and White is unusual for such a colourful flower.
That said, I think you have achieved the compositions well and the subtle light adds interest to the photographs.
Well taken and processed.

Thanks. I actually experimented with a number of orchid shots and found that the all white ones worked best -- the coloured flowers just seemed flat in B&W and were best left as shot.
B@W captures the texture of the flowers even better than color, the relief is very prominent. There is a small problem with the colorful center, it seems to have lost its importance; it might regain much of it with different lighting from a f3/4 frontal position.
