This won't stand up to intense technical scrutiny, but I'm hoping you'll offer opinions on composition and related.

Thanks so much.

I think that if you crop the dark bottom out to just below the row of houses, and maybe the same amount from the top it would look better. Just my opinion.

The source of the smoke should remain, tho.

I am just talking about the dark area, it looks to be A Vineyard, the town, the houses and the smoke stack stay.

Linda I can’t get used to your new avatar. Nothing really wrong wth your presentation as is, if your not caring too much for it then…….

Like the old, gritty look. Almost thought (hoped) if I downloaded I'd see a steam locomotive making that plume! While I understand negative space can be useful, I might crop some of the sky, as has been suggested elsewhere, since it doesn't add much, but I'd leave the bottom as is. Nice scene! The two points of interest (mountain and steam) form a diagonal, which makes for a nice dynamic.

Thank you all so much for your comments!

I second Frank's welcome - always great to see new faces in FYC! Hope you'll post a topic or two. A great variety of interests and styles here, along with free-flowing discussions.

Both crop suggestions are below. I prefer the one that retains the dark foreground, though I'm going to work on lightening it a bit.

Frank, thanks for your take on the image. As Minnie mentioned re one of her "flips," when you know the way it's supposed to look, it's hard to accept a reverse image :)

Overall, I was happy with my composition (in fact, I initially wished the smoke wasn't there, but in processing, I decided I quite like it), just not my image quality. That came about because I don't like using a tripod, light was low (dawn) and I had to use too high an ISO and too small an aperture. Fortunately, I mostly prefer shooting with the sun :)

New avatar: I clicked the wrong button in my profile and lost my old one. Grabbed Trixie from a recent post. It's disconcerting seeing her stare soulfully at me every time I comment!

I knew the flip would not work Linda but had to do it anyway.

And I'm glad you waited to respond until I had time to edit my comments four times :)

I had the same thought!

Welcome to FYC, cabunit. I like that NYNH&H FL9 in your avatar.

Linda I do wish I could be positive but its just another wide vista landscape that Im sure in reality is a stunning scene which your camera sensor cannot possible capture and relay the sense of awe beauty and whatever else this scene did for you.
Not sure the bland and realistic pp helps at all. Have an Ansell pill scream up the tonal range scale after cropping in close to the mountain.
There has been a few discussions lately on landscapes. I started a post with a a shot of a beautiful part of the UK asking for edits. Got some great edits but all end up as "Yea well OK" type of images.
Convinced personally that the only way landscape on this scale works is as Ansell did and make the image in extreme PP or concentrate on a much smaller area.

I rather like this image as it stands, there are many examples of views of "iconic scenery" that, if care not be taken, might contain egregious and disturbingly distracting nearby evidence of "the hand of man". When I see an image such as this I think of the folks who live in that smoke-belching area, who, if asked, will assure you that they are delighted live in such a wonderfully beautiful area!

There are a variety of "messages", if such be intended, that can be drawn from any primary image and pp versions thereof.

Good going, Linda, for making us consider the possibility of different messages.
