Landscape images don't always need to depict cheerful, inviting scenery to be effective.

Along the Schuylkill or the Brandywine?

I'm thinking Schuylkill from the bike path on the North Side east of Valley Forge...and I like it...homesick and all that.....

Good gloomy wilderness for sure 2c4 and this one could almost fit in with those non-color...color photos from IC's post. Very effective.

Good guess! Actually it's Pennypack Creek which, as both the Schuykill River and Brandywine Creek, also joins the Delaware River.

Thank you, Linda! In editing, I shifted the overall tones slightly more towards the blue to emphasize the cold and bleakness. The barren branches and distant haze did the rest.

Thanks, Frank. You're right about this pic's similarity to those non-color/ color images illustrated in IC's post; I was thinking the very same thing after downloading the image from camera.

This is one miserable bleak spot young rook. Please do not tell me you live close to this place. If one could see the chimneys and dome of Chernobyl in the background it would comes as no surprise.
Your image has a strange appeal for some reason. A nice capture

Thanks for the compliment, Billyspad. Considering your general aversion to landscape photography, your compliment means all the more.

Chernobyl? Yeah, I can see that. I picture this scene as a backdrop for some depressing horror movie... involving decomposing corpses and creepy, demented backwoods folk who don't like strangers.

Yes, I do live close to this place... walking distance, in fact. Fortunately it does not look like this all year around, and can be rather picturesque during most of the year.

My aversion to landscape photography comes merely from the fact the camera operator and his little sensor fail to capture the feel of a place. You have skillfully done that with what to be honest does not look particularly interesting or picturesque at this time of year so my hat goes off to you sir.

On the download, I'm enamored by the shape of the tree in the middle and the subtle colors with emerald green. For me, the water and reflection detract from the image that I, myself, me, and only I would prefer if the image were mine. I'd cut them out to leave an interesting scene with beautiful colors that, despite cold and gloom, would, for me, make a beautiful image of woods.

I saw your photograph and it made me remember something that at first I could not pinpoint. Then it came to me....it reminds me of this:

Thats Edward Steichen: “The Pond – Moonlight”, (1904)

I really like this!

Interesting observation. I now feel tempted to return with a telephoto lens and take a few images without the inclusion of the creek. However, the weather and lighting conditions will need to be similar if I want to closely match the feel of this version. Thank you for sharing your intuitive thoughts, Ediesaul.

Although I am aware of Steichen's masterpiece, I wasn't thinking about it at the time I took the photo. But to some extent, I must have been influenced by it indirectly, as I do love "The Pond - Moonlight" very much. Such a powerful image. Sometimes you can be influenced by a work of someone else and not even realize it!
