I guess it's going to be like the pixel race. Canon's latest release, the Pixma Pro-1 MK II costs $1,000 and has 12 ink cartridges. It would be cheaper to fill the car with gas than to fill the printer with ink. Crutchfield has a 12-pack for $360. That's about 168 ml of ink. Anyone want to figure cost per gallon?

It is always a race to the top, or the bottom - sometimes it is hard to tell. As to printers, looking at if from a cost perspective I just get how most can afford or justify doing their own must of the times compared to commercial printers. But I understand fully that some enjoy the control - so I guess such competition is good.

This particular printer renders beauutiful images so if it's what one wants why not. Maybe it's like the ISO wars, how many of us really need 200k iso?

NotnoBuddha, you mention control so I'll ask something: How many famous photographers can you name that sent their work to an outside lab? The closed loop with complete artistic control is what they used.

I can not name one famous, semi so, or an actual professional photographer that does, or does not use an outside lab as opposed to their own in house. I will however repeat; that for those that believe the control is needed, such equipment allows for that opion. I would also speculate that the vast majority of users on this site, and in fact photographers in general would never notice the difference between a competent commercial lab and any home printer except for the price and time difference - but they too have that option. For me, I have decided.

I bought one.

Very nice, is all I will say.

I drive a very large gas tank also.

One drawback(?) to me, is that it does not take roll paper.

Back in the days of Kodacolor, we would actually work with the lab techs in the darkroom, burn this, dodge that...with the right technician, nothing was impossible.

My big Canon i9900 has 8 cartridges ($75), and that's my limit.

My MP970 Scans slides & 35MM strips in both pos & neg. I can scan docs & print them. I can scan pic's too etc & it does a pretty good job. It has 5 cartridges. Individuals which can be replaced singularly. $25 aud a pop. It floats my boat.

I baught the pro 9500 mk2 and it has 10 inks. The quality is great and the control you have over it. I just wish they would give you more ink in the certriges. It seems like I am always out of one color. When it runs out of one color you can't print even if you don't need that color. I would love to find a ink refill company for this printer.

That's what I don't like about printers - one ink gets used up, and you can't choose a different color for printing. I mean for printing text, of course. I'm getting rid of an old Epson and an HP because one ink is used up in each. I have the other colors, but I don't want to keep buying "just one more cartridge." We have three Canon Pixma iP4500 printers, so I can buy just one kind of cartridge - much more efficient.

There must be someone on ebay selling ink for your printer. I've bought a lot of aftermarket ink from ebay. I print mostly text, and it's fine for that.

For everyday use I use an Epson all in one. Print, fax, scan, copy. It's not good for photos as far as I'm concerned. I would love to get the Pixma 1 but budget won't allow it right now. One thing I like in a printer is one that will let you print in black even though the color runs out. Most don't since ink is where the profit is.

I have an HP C5280 all-in-one that's great for printing on CDs/DVDs. That's all I use it for.

I talked with a Canon rep recently about the cost of ink for the Pixma Pro-1. He indicated that the actual cost was less when you looked at the size difference in the containers. The new containers hold more ink and if you compared the cost per unit to say the cartridges in the Canon i9900 the cost was lower. The way they have the ink bundled in big packages makes for a shock in the wallet. I have seen photo's from the printer and they are stunning. The B & W are out of this world in quality. I also looked at the Epson line of photo printers and felt that they looked really out standing at a lower cost. Have not made a purchase as my Canon i9900 still is doing a great job after 6 years of excellent work.
