I enjoy Macro Photography. I have been through about 4 Nikon Micro Nikkor lenses looking for the best for my images that I want to take. The one I like currently is the Nikon-Nikkor-105mm-f-2-8-Macro-Micro-AF-Lens.
That is the one I would suggest.

Image attached taken with it that one Best of Show at a camera club competition.

They are ALL great. The longer focal lengths ( 150-180-200mm) tend to be a bit sharper and more versatile - if you use them properly.

100 or so mm is a nice compromise. The main difference in the lenses in this category is the cost.

I would suggest posting your question here in the "True Macro" section. http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/s-102-1.html

Not because the answers here are bad but, because that section is far more specific to macro in general.

I own and use daily, a Nikkor 105G macro lens. It works perfectly. If I had to replace it, I would purchase a Sigma 105mm macro lens.

Douglas, from the macro forum suggested the 105mm Sigma Macro lens and I got it and am very happy with all aspects of this lens...check it out as I think it is selling at a new lower price...
Good luck..!

I agree I opted for the nikkor 200mm F4 macro, didn't see the need for the f2.8 and I like the 18" working distance.
But the cost might be a factor.
WWW.pbase.com/manglesphoto for sample of what this lens can do

Longer focal lengths can be quite a challenge to do handheld shooting in the field. Of course the greater working distance is a huge plus.

I'm not sure how or why longer focal lengths would tend to be sharper :| Could please explain than one. :?:

If you have the funds, get the Nikon 200mm f4 ED micro-nikkor lens.

Here are reviews of this lens: 10 out of 10 score.
