My D7000 will often stop working and freezes up. Nothing but removing the battery for a short time will get it up and running. When it is in this hung up mode the only thing different that is visible is that there is a small icon on the top LCD. It sort of looks like a battery symbol but simpler than the normal one. It is in the upper left corner of the display.
Normally the top display shows the amount of pictures that can be stored, even if the battery is removed.
It has been sent to Nikon for repair but they claim they cannot duplicate the problem. The first time it was sent in they replaced some electronic board and the internal flash was inoperative. So it had to go back for that. The second time they just returned it.
Has anybody experienced a similar issue? My 5 year service plan runs out next January. It does get sent to Nikon for repair.

Time to upgrade before it dies...
It's happened to both my D7000 and D750 on rare occasions. It is not a common occurrence. As you say, briefly removing and reseating the battery resolved the problem each time. And, I can't remember exactly what, if anything, I was doing to the controls just before a freeze.
I believe other brands occasionally experience similar problems. I've seen at least one other thread on this site on the problem in the not too distant past. If it were to become a frequent event, I would likely be seeking service from Nikon.
I wonder if is it isn't somewhat like my computer that hangs up when I hit two keys at once. Something like the old typewriters that had two keys stick together. On my computer I have to shut it down (it is like removing the power source)to get it to work again. Just wondering.
Just happened to my 7000 2 weeks ago, removed the camera battery (not the one from the grip) put it right back in and things have been fine since, I'm now in the market to replace it.

I had a similar problem with my D7000. It would infrequently freeze, turn itself off and drain batteries. It turned out to be a bad SD-card.
Have you tried changing the memory card? I would send it back to Nikon. I have heard about them returning cameras with nothing done but persistence usually gets a resolution including a replacement. In fact, i would insist on it being replaced.

Mark, who are you responding to?

The OP.
If you have a read/write error, I am just thinking it could be the cause of the freeze. The other thing to consider is if the problem is always with the same lens.
I experience the occasional freezing up with my Nikon D5200. It just won't take the shot. It might be a "not in focus" issue that initiates the freeze up. Not sure. I just turn the camera on & off & eventually it kicks in again.
