View images from download

I have noticed over the past couple of weeks what I think is more than the normal talk about what a difference viewing an image in download makes. For those that might not know…..downloading and viewing the images makes a difference period. Anyone commenting from just a thumbnail view to a poster is really not doing justice to the poster or themselves. Just my 2 cents worth.

Good to know. I tend to be lazy and look at thumbnail.

And I am in total agreement with Franks assessment. If the option of viewing an image in "download" is provided, by all means, use it!

If you are not going to make comment to the poster I see nothing at all wrong with that 27.

I've noticed for some images, download makes a huge difference, but for other images, less of a difference. I think this is due to the image's level of saturation and contrast, and perhaps also related to the complexity of detail found within the image, and how this fine detail impacts the whole.

The automatic resizing software the board uses can make a mess of some images, yes. I do think that a good composition should hold up regardless of the size. A lot of the "please check the download" requests are to show off the detail, which is more about the camera than the photographer.

For some images it really doesn't make that big a difference. For others it does. The darker the image the less I can tell about it in the thumbnail - maybe that is just my own old eyes. Some images, such as a recent one by par4dcr, were so wildlly different in color and tone of the thumbnail and the download, it was useless to look at the thumbnail. I don't have any explanation for that, just an observation.

As for detail, it matters in some of mine because of how I shoot, with all that mess in the frame, especially if I've got Little People hidden in the briars somewhere. Some of the Monhegan shots, for instance, will have a bunch of little detail, and they will be a bit more interesting in download where you can find the tiny lobstermen.

What's usually called a thumbnail on this site I call a snapshot size ...maybe 4X6 usually. A "thumbnail" is, to me, about the size of a postage stamp or our avatars and even those differ widely as to what they may include. But I like to be fair and, especially where it may make a big difference, I find it a lot faster to merely magnify the picture with the little slider in the lower right corner of the monitor than to use the download. Aren't we all in a hurry sometimes...a bit annoying to see a download come up only inch by inch, and sometimes huge. But in doing all 3 things, I think I'm more thorough than many who just take a quick look. Of course that means when hurried, there isn't as much time in one's day to look at everything. There are some really nice images in Gallery, People, etc. but don't frequently click in there.

Thanks Don, it might be news for some and not for others but thought it should be stated.
