OK, so I "got by" with my printed out Bahtinov Focusing Mask in my home made mount. But I wondered if I could do better with a "real" mask....
So I spent the dime and nickel for a real mask. A Gosky Bahtinov Focusing Mask. And it does give much sharper spires and view to focus with. Money well spent. (I've been very happy with Gosky as well)
Last night, although a short night for me, I discovered a greater value in it.

Vega seems to be a favorite alignment star for my location and mount. It seems to be a go-to first for me.
So, last night, not at all happy with the Parfocal between my CCD camera, and my eyepiece in my flip mirror box, I noticed Vaga was close to my nubula I wanted to image.
So I picked Vega in Stellarium and slewed, (Sloan? Slided? Slid? Skedaddled?) to Vega, put the mask on the scope, and set the program to a 5 second exposure loop.
A-HA! I had the lovely focusing spires radiating from Vega so I could adjust the focus of the image on my laptops screen. Brilliant! (OK, brilliant for me anyway.)
I then carefully flipped the mirror and adjusted the eyepiece (@ 8mm) focus to get the eyepiece in Parfocus with my CCD image.
Finally, getting a great focus between the two.
Thank You Vega! Thank You Bahtinov Mask! Thank You Knuckelhead (me)!

I seem to learn something every time I fire that mother up.

Thank You, Craig!
Buying a "real" Bahtinov Mask really made a sharper difference!

Thanks Jim!
Blueberry Cheerio, Well I suppose so.
That little Cheerio has been one of my faithful Go-To's when trying out different methods, or new to me discoveries. (Wide eyed wonder here... )
I use Stellarium of late to try and seek out my targets. It gives me a 'Pre-View' of where something might be so I can imagine if my scope can see it over, under, or around, my native obstacles.
If the target looks viable, it's a simple series of clicks to slew it into the telescope. ;)

PS: I did select the (Store Original), twice. But oddly it did not store the original in 2 attempts. :?
Sorry, I wanted it to be downloadable. :|

You're welcome Sonny, I just tried to put mine on my Meade 8" SCT and it only fits on a Celestron 8" SCT. :( :( :(
So I'll have to go out and get the right one for my Scope. Darn.

I have an 8" celestron. How much do you want for it?
Shoot me a pm.

Oh, frustrating!

I only have one scope....
Simple mind, simple pleasures. ;)

I briefly pondered using it on my wide angle lens of my camera. Just out of curiosity.
Initially, I think the stars might be too small to really see the markers.
But I'm wondering... :-D

Oh, and my Gosky 12.5mm Illuminated Eyepiece failed miserably last night.
I was able to use the crosshairs for centering by playing my red LED headlamp into the front of the scope.
So at 3 AM I sent an email to Amazon about wishing to contact Gosky, and requesting an email address for them.
At 8:30 this morning I opened an email that Amazon was refunding the purchase price and I could reorder a new one if I'd like.
I didn't expect that...
The email went on to say I could keep or dispose of the defunct unit. 8-)
But I credit an amazing night of alignment to that eyepiece you lead me to add to my box.
If it had been a Mead like yours, it probably wouldn't have failed.

True Story:
We were coming home from a Panama Canal Cruise and had a day to kill before our plane home. So we booked and excursion in the Everglades.
When that was done, waiting for our shuttle, I was walking towards the shuttle area and was looking over at a trailer park.
The last trailer, the one about 200 yards away, was an older appearing ~40' Airstream; with a smaller weathered car with Pep Boys aplicae (stick on) flames on the side, rust, and a "For Sail" sign on it; A weathered and rusty Pick-Up truck with a shell on its bed; and at the furthest point was an absolutely outrageous Bumble Bee painted shined up and chromed out huge bumptious airboat.
I laughed. We may not have a pot to piss in, nor a window that opens to throw it out of, but by God we have our $150,000 swamp skeeter Airboat!
Got to have them priorities straight! ;)

I bet it belonged to the owner of the Airboat excursion outfit.

I don't suppose you replaced the batteries to see if they somehow went dead?
Hemmmm...
I happen to have the same eyepiece in the Celestron flavor that I was using night before last to center with. It helps.
A Lot!

Didn't need to.
I took it apart and the switch circuitry in the end was all boogered up, including a wire broke off.
So, since Amazon refunded the entire purchase price, but to my points account, I did a shop with points and have an Orion unit coming to replace it.
Reason being, all of them seem to have the same light source screwed into them. But the Orion has what appears to be a different, and hopefully higher quality switch/battery compartment.
Appears to be like this $20 replacement illuminator.
So I'm gonna try Orion's this time. ;)
Also, it has a nice rubber eye cup. The eye cup for the one I have is my finger wrapped around it. :hunf:

I wanted to post an example of the focusing mask.
(untouched, just exported as a jpg from my CCD Orion Camera Studio program.)

Vega, through the mask.
