Question about Nikon 50 mm lens

I recently bought a lens on Ebay, a Nikon 50 mm, 1.8. There was no owners manual to go with it of course. To my question, there is a small locking mechanism, which according to what I read on Internet, should be locked while the aperture is set to f22. When I do this, I can't change the aperture with my dial or manually. If it is unlocked, I must manually rotate the aperture ring and I get half of the aperture, 0 at the large end and f11 at the small end. What am I missing here? I'm using a Nikon D7100.

In order for the camera to shoot in auto or even Aperture Priority the aperture ring must be locked in @ f22.

I have my camera set on manual settings with auto focus turned on at the camera.

Did you set the aperture at f/22 and lock it "before" you put the lens on the camera? If so, the camera's front command dial should then control the aperture in an appropriate mode.

If you want to use the aperture ring on the lens, you have to select that in custom settings. See page 257 in your cameras owners manual.

You can change the setting with the dial, not the ring, leave it in lock. When the shutter is depressed the aperture will automatically move to the desired position, if you want a depth of field preview push the Preview button on the front of the camera .

I actually don't want to use the aperture ring.
