Don't expect a huge improvement over your other lenses, or you will be disappointed.

Not so sure why you say this, although he has a couple of lenses that are really good, there are others in his bag that are not in the same class optically.

Congrats! I have one and love it, many say that the new 100-400 is an acceptable substitute, but I am not so sure, I have both lenses and when there is a family gathering it will always be the 70-200 that gets mounted to my camera.

I have both the 70-200 2.8 L II and the 100-400 L II. I generally keep the 70-200 on my 6D and the 100-400 on my 7DII. If I could only have one it would be the 100-400. They both weigh about the same and are both about equally bulky. Image quality is outstanding for both. The 100-400 not only has longer reach but also focuses closer then the 70-200. My primary reason for having the 70-200 is for it's faster speed for those times when I am shooting in low light without a tripod. Both are excellent lenses, but I find the 100-400 to be more useful overall for the shooting I do. For family gatherings though, I agree. The 70-200 would be the one.

Mine is almost the same setup as yours, 6D/7D MkII, 100-400 Mk II and the older 70-200 f/2.8 IS. I pretty much use the lenses on the same bodies as you do, 6D with the 70-200 for portraits and landscape, the 7Dii with the 100-400ii is my birding setup.

Was wondering about this myself. My 70-200 2.8 L II blows away most other lenses I have used with the exception of the 24-70 f2.8 L that is equally good.

I have that lens (with IS), and it's been great on first my 30D, and now my 7D.
I find it a little soft at 200mm on subjects more than a half-mile away, but it sharpens up at about 180mm.
I use mine with a 1.4x Canon converter on it.
Each lens, despite efforts otherwise, has its own little quirks the user has to learn. Some have the quirk of working exactly as designed! Hope yours is one of those!

hope you been working out. Your arms are going to get tired fast...I sold that lens and opted for a new Tamron 70-300mm which is a lot lighter and easy on the pocketbook. It produces sharp pictures and, surprisingly, has excellent reviews. Good luck with your lens...

Ordered a used EF 70-200mm f/2.8L USM from Adorama!

I should be getting it later today!

I plan on breaking it in on Sunday during the Philadelphia Marathon. Forecast for Sunday is 50% chance of showers.

Any advice on getting the most out of this lens would be appreciated.

(I got a case of PF , so my heel won't allow me to run this year)

I got it! Took some experimental shots. It is WAY better than my 70-300! W A Y better. I think it is mostly because of how fast and accurately it locks focus. For what I am doing, that is vital. It is heavy, so I will be heading to Allen's Camera in Levittown after work to look at monopods. I will be shooting the Philly Marathon on Sunday and do not want to hand hold this lens for five to six hours!

From what I am reading, I plan to use just the monopod without a ball head. I will just leave the collar a little loose to shift between landscape and portrait.

Any thoughts?

Also, thank you all for your input. :D

You're going to love that lens. It's one of my favorites. You will get use to the weight especially once you you see what it produces at 2.8!

A monopod works much better with a Manfro 234 tilt head or similar on it. I would put a Kenko Pro 1.4X behind it and a Canon 500D in front of it for close up work. If you are not real fussy, you can put a 2X behind it also. The newer 70-200 II works much better with the 2X.

You might try "the-digital-picture.com". They do very good reviews of Canon (and a few other brands) lenses and bodies. They offer several ideas concerning lenses that may influence your usage. The site is an excellent source of information concerning how and why this lens works.

One down, 21 to go (to avoid replication)
