Fix or Replace?

I did a stupid. . . I dropped my B&W 77mm Circular Polarizer filter. And will not turn.

I suspect that it landed on an edge and bent the ring that screws into the front of the lens.

Has anybody had much experience fixing polarizer filters themselves? Or having one repaired?

Thank you.

Steve

I'm sure you're not the first. I would contact the manufacturer and see if they have a repair service, and if it's cheaper than replacement.

Definitely! They may not have a repair service, but they may save you money on a replacement.

You are not stupid. Accidents happen. I recently had a lens fall out of my pocket. Don't fret over it and just get yourself a new filter.

Never done this myself, but I understand there are tools to repair the threads available out there. You might want to research that. Of course asking here is researching it. Hopefully someone here has experience with this.

Are the threads damaged and it will not screw onto the lens, or will the front section of the polarizer not turn?

Stuff happens Steve, most of us have been there, many worse, but if it will still turn you may be able to use a thread file of the correct pitch and thread count to clean up the threads. It doesn't take much distortion to cause this problem and you really must be pretty good with your hands, have considerable patience and keep testing as you work to see if it fits. Good luck Steve. - Paul count

Not likely they will repair. The glass is fused on the assembly. This is not like a lens with screws. I can't see you trying to do this yourself without creating more problems. Replace.

Contact the manufacturer/distributor for help. They may do you a favor just for the "goodwill" of a return and loyal customer. You have nothing to loose by asking for their help.

Good question. If the filter screws into the lens, rotating it in the lens would probably serve the purpose.

The threads were not damaged, it is the ring containing the polarized material. It will no longer rotate easily. I ended up replacing the filter.

Thank you for everybody's response.
