I like your attitude, although I had to read "Very punny" two times before I got it. I've never been accused of being the "sharpest tool in the shed". Oh yeah...really cool photo!

How do we know this was not simply set on a tripod and the photographer exposed several shots getting all the different lightning strikes and then combined them to make this one shot? That is easily done by the way. My jury is still out, since I've done such a thing a few times.

I believe the article said that his previous attempts were 3 exposures at 20 seconds each, and this was one exposure.
I took that to mean that the shutter was open, probably for way longer than 20 seconds, which allowed the time for all the lightning strikes in one shot.
Even if he superimposed several shots, it's still a great photograph.
