I have plenty of FX glass for the D800 and D810. However my wife wants to start shooting pictures on her own... and wants a lighter set up. She has decided on the the D5500 with 18-140 lens. This Camera fits her hands better and is half the weight ( I tried to get her to use the D800... no luck!!)
How successful will my FX glass be on the D5500?

My gut says go for a D7100 refurb and use your FX glass.

Depends on what type of FX lenses you have. For her to be able to autofocus your lenses on her camera, they would need to have focus motors built into the lenses...

Fine. Some say better because the DX doesn't use the projected edges which usually have a little distortion. And some FX lenses are higher quality.

But heavier and more expensive than DX lenses.

D5500 will take better images than D7100...which also weighs twice as much.

So, you can use FX lenses on a D7100?
I thought you couldn't/shouldn't use FX lenses on a DX camera. Is it because of the focus motors?

I use older FX film lenses on my D7100 daily with no issues. Whomever told you that either was dumb, stupid , or both...

Your 50mm f1.8 is an FX lens.
Looks like all you have are DX cameras w/o built-in focus motors.
Which 50 do you have? I'm guessing the G MODEL?

One issue people run up against is older lenses w/o built-in focus motors.
The D7xxx (DX) line has a focus motor in the body and can use the older AF lenses.
The D5xxx and D3xxx series do not have that feature.

If the lens has Af-S in the description it is Ok for the 5500. If no AF-S then she will have to focus manually.

That answers the original question.

Your wife's pictures will be their best if she is shooting with her camera of choice.

No, it's the other way around. DX lenses are designed to cover the DX sensor which is smaller then an FX sensor.

Think of it in this crude way, using holes to represent lens coverage and pegs to represent sensor sizes.

FX (holes and pegs) = 1.5 in. DX (holes and pegs) = 1 in.

FX "pegs" will ONLY fit thru an FX "hole", but will not fit in a DX "hole". The DX "peg" will fit thru either of the DX and FX "holes". Hence, DX lenses will not fully cover an FX sensor.

Hope this helps.
