I have a D610. In the menus selection, there is an option to shoot in HDR. I cannot activate that option. I shoot in RAW.
Any insight would be greatly appreciated.......Thank you.

Yup, Raw means Raw -- No effects. If you want to do HDR with Raw files then you have to Shoot multiple bracketed exposures (varying only shutter speed) and Create the HDR PP with Photoshop or some other program. That is the only way that I have tried HDR thus far. Though personally I have never liked any of my HDR results so I stick with "normal" shooting. I also sometimes work with 16-bit files in Ps CS6.

I thought I might want to use the option. Skane had the answer. It is only an option when shooting JPEG. Thanks

Shooting in raw is good, but for HDR, try the bracketing feature - three shots.

Thanks. That part I had read about. The option thru the menu selection is only available if shooting in JPEG.

I like HDR. You can get some very nice effects with it. I have a Canon that shoots in HDR and several utilities that allow bracketed exposures as well as single images. None of them, that I am aware of, use RAW. Most will accept RAW input but they are converted to JPG before the effects are applied. I do not think any HDR software produces an HDR image in RAW. :?: I have also found that no two of the utilities have the same presets so the possibilities are plentiful. (I likes presets) Of course you can still do it manually if you like.

LR will produce an HDR image in DNG format, if that is what you are using. PS produces a TIFF file, when I have done it that way. I don't know of any software which would only produce a jpeg in HDR processing...

Yes it only works for JPEG so shoot RAW + JPEG and remember it take time between shots for the HDR to process in Camera.

Shooting raw is the preferred procedure for doing HDR.

Shoot bracketed raw images (best is 2/3 stop steps and at least 5 images). Get Photomatix software and drag the images to the icon. I will do the rest, and then let you edit or select a preset effect. I have mixed views as I often get strange shadows/halos and just a surrealistic result.

Jerry, he was talking about in Camera HDR processing which only works on JPEG.

Yes, I know. I was responding to this: "I do not think any HDR software produces an HDR image in RAW."

The final result isn't in raw, but the software uses raw to do the processing.

Thanks. That is exactly what I meant. You certainly can start with a RAW files if you feel you want to PP the images before HDR processing but when the entire process is over and done the result will not be in a RAW format. JPG is the default on the software I use and where the output can be other than JPG I do not believe it will be in DNG, CR2, or any other RAW format. Am I incorrect? Someone up the line said LR could "produce" an HDR image in the DNG format. I do not use LR but Photomatix and Elements 11 and HDRist cannot. If it does what would the purpose be?
