sony A7II files and LR

I am currently running LR5.4 and thinking of going to CC. Just received a Sony A7SII and it is no surprise that my older version of LR cannot read the files even though it does read the Older A7R files.

Firstly, does anyone know if the LR version in CC reads these files yet? Probably will eventually, but I wonder if it is a reason to covert to CC now.

And does LR6 read them. I received a free download of LR with a camera I purchased last year, but have not used it. Does it make sense to download and install LR6 now or should I just to to CC.

Thanks in advance.

John, have you made sure your ACR is completely up to date. Adobe is still updating ACR, last I read.

I am actually on LR 5.7. Not sure what you mean by "ACR"?

And I thought Adobe has stopped providing support/updates for versions earlier than 6.

ACR, Adobe Camera Raw is the engine behind LR and PS.

Adobe Camera Raw. It's part of Bridge. That's the part that will read the RAW files.

I thought that was what you were referring to, but I do not use it. I import directly to LR.

John, perhaps it might behoove you to check it out. If you open Bridge, the Help menu has a check for updates. That's the method I use to check for updates, little that I need them at this point.

I downloaded the Sony software, and it allowed me to read the files, but not to edit. It asked if I wanted to export the files to LR for "further editing" as it read that LR was on my computer. I said yes and it linked to LR, and then the program crashed. It acted like the software was able to link to LR, but that LR was not updated for this version of Sony Play Memories Home.

I guess I'll go to Adobe CC and get going with PS and the latest LR. Figure that will be the first to update to the current Mark2 versions of the A7 cameras.

By the way, I like the camera and some of the Zeiss lenses really rock.

Sorry to hear of the issue. I have to admit, if I needed to upgrade from what I'm using, I'd go with the CC version of PS and LR. The price is reasonable.

That is the one thing Sony has had going for it, Zeiss lenses.

Capture One (for Sony) has just updated the Sony uncompressed raw file and works great, I'm thinking of dropping Lightroom, I'm liking Capture One better anyway.

LR 6 handles the A7-II RAW files easily. It will not handle the A7R-II RAW files without the latest ACR, which of course comes with the burden of the altered import screen.

Here is the official statement on the Sony a7ii and its new version of uncompressed RAW files from Adobe themselves. It is dated only four weeks ago.

http://blogs.adobe.com/lightroomjournal/

If you don't want to spend money, subscribe to the CC or prefer your current software, Adobe provides a free and easy way to do that.

Sounds like you need to upgrade to CC. First of all, if you do upgrade, then any new camera bodies raw files will be supported. Your old version of LR will not support any camera body that is/was released for sale after LR6 was released. I take it that your new Sony is a newly released camera body?

What someone else was saying about ACR being part of Adobe Bridge is incorrect. ACR stands for Adobe Camera Raw. Photoshop and Photoshop Elements (PSE) both have a plugin called ACR where raw image files can be edited and then transferred back to into the pixel editing program for further editing. Lightroom is based on the same software engine as ACR. In fact, the Develop module in LR is exactly the same as ACR in that any changes you make in one, will have the exact slider references as the other. They are exactly the same. If you changed the exposure by one stop in LR, and then opened that same image in ACR, the exposure would already be altered by one stop. Lightroom has a little more user friendly interface and it does one thing that ACR can't do - it has a history of your changes that can be used to go back infinite steps.

True. Adobe ceased supporting legacy Photoshop versions. My PS CS4 has the then ACR version and it will not open Raw from my Sony a6000. Adobe has no update for cameras more recent than CS4 issuance.

I think the lack of update support has to marketing trying to push everyone into their latest PS.

I have A7r II and I have had no problem with CC reading the files. For $10/month you get all the latest updates...I just got a pop-up yesterday that there's a new Lightroom update for me to install. I was hesitant at first, but am sure "joining" CC was the right move. I don't know how much you use your Adobe-related applications; I'm not a huge user, but CC is worth it.
