I was wondering if anyone has had the option to compare the 2 cameras mentioned in the title? I currently have the Canon - and I'd like to continue shooting RAW, however, I'm just not sure that the quality of the Canon lens is the best. I should state that I am a somewhat knowledgeable amateur - I usually shoot in P mode with settings suggested to me by a member. I like the idea of a bridge camera. I also have a Nikon P510 which I like but it does not shoot RAW. I'd just like some opinions on whether the Panasonic is a step up or a step down from the Canon. thanks.

I suspect either is a good choice...certainly as far as image quality.
Compare at DXOMark or Snapsort.com. Snapsort likes the Panasonic but you need to check their reasons vs. your wants.

you might compare them on <snapsort.com>, tom
I have the Lumix dmc g5 you might take a look at it, tom

will do - thanks for that info.
Are you looking for reach or IQ? I have both and took the FZ1000 to Australia for two weeks with great results on both stillls and videos.
I have 2 Nikons D7000, 1 Nikon D7100, but since more than a year I have the FZ1000. Since that, I rarely use my Nikons except for contest where I use both, Nikon & Lumix. Both winners!!!!! Lumix is lighter, more versatile and easier to bring for a trip or for trekking than my Nikons. Great camera, my Lumix!!!!! A little bit less zooming than the Canon, but a little better quality of photos. That is my opinion!!!!
If zoom, sensor and lens size count, the comparison for the SX50 (or now SX60) in the Panasonic line is FZ300. It is the descendant of the highly recarged FZ150 and FZ200.
The FZ1000 has a much bigger sensor and larger lens to go with it. It also shoots 4K video.
DPReview calls them "Long Zoom Compacts" and does a pretty good job of comparing features and benefits in a recent "Roundup":
http://www.dpreview.com/articles/1860119223/2015-roundup-long-zoom-compactsThe article rates the FZ1000 a bit higher than the SX60.

thanks for all those links - good info. Too bad the Lumix is so expensive - that's the main thing holding me back now!

Can I answer "both"? I like the fact that I don't have to carry around an extra lens in order to be able to zoom in -- right now I have the Canon SX50 Hs and a Nikon P510 both of which have basically a superzoom. I rarely use the zoom full out but like the option to be able to so so.Perhaps I should pose another question listing what I'm looking for and get suggestions from people....thanks for your question -- it made me sit down and think about what I'd really want in another camera
