A very good friend of mine wanted my opinion on a point and shoot camera. I am no expert so I thought I would ask my fellow hogs for an opinion. The 2 camera's he picked out were a Nikon S7000 and a Panasonic DMCZs40. He also indicated he wanted a point and shoot that had an EVF. This I think would disqualify the Nikon camera as I don't think it has one. As always comments are solicited with different units or comments on the other one he selected. I think his budget is about $300.
For the money, I'd go with a Canon SX50. You can pick one up new for around $300 to $320, it has EVF and 50X zoom and it's not a bad looking camera either.

Canon currently has the SX50 HS refurbished for $149.99

(The sx50 is a bridge camera, much larger than a DMCZs40 or a s7000.) The Panasonic is his best bet, it has a viewfinder and a longer zoom.
