The Edmund Fitzgerald left Superior, WI on November 9, 1975 on the way to Detroit and sank in Lake Superior the next day. It was the largest ore ship on the lakes and is the largest ship to have sunk on the Lakes. Forty years ago this week.

There was a song, sung by Gordan Lightfoot, about the sinking of this ship'
Dave.

I think the song is what made the Edmund Fitzgerald a household name.

It is as haunting today as it was 40 years ago, and still brings mist to the eyes. I remember at the time that Gordon Lightfoot was pretty well keel-hauled for capitalizing on such a tragedy, but, it has kept that ship and its crew in our minds and hearts for the past 40 years. So, it was after all, not such a bad thing for his moving lyrics & melody.

It wasn't as bad as the guy who wrote " there will be a hot, hot time in Lakeherst, New Jersey when the Hindenburg lands today "

They still have a remembrance on that day and ring the ship's bell 39 times. Very moving experience.

Lake Superior is aptly named. Those who ignore it are often the subject of woeful results and sometimes even inspiration for a song.

I recall in the 90's the Edmund Fitzgerald's wreck was located and the ship's bell brought up and presented the the families and community. It now resides at the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum where it is displayed in honor of her crew.

Yes, one of the most powerful ballads of all time. Still makes me feel creepy to hear it. Can't recall one that rivals it.
