I recently got a 70-200 2.8 IS used for $1500 and love it.
You may want to consider a 1st gen used.
From a Nikon guy - I think the "IS" is image stabilization (we call it Vibration Reduction). It seems it comes down to whether you want that or not. They appear to be the same, otherwise.
Thank you for your replys i need to find where i can buy one second hand in australia i supose
thanks again
Amazon has the 70-200mm f2.8 for $1200(US). I would go for the 2.8, it is an awesome lens. Are their any lens rental companies down under?
Yes Dasloaf there are some rental companies that is a good idea to tryit out and thank you swamp i will take a look... everypne has been very helpful thank you it is very much apreciated
Not sure, but the shipping and duty could negate any cost savings. I got my F90 from Henry's (Ontario) eBay store and the shipping + duty was almost as much as the camera.

Geez, if you're already in Australia, you should find out about the auction of all that hot Canon equipment in Hong Kong that recently showed up on a UHH link. The duty savings and shipping fees should easily cover the cost of the trip to that auction, and most times the equipment sells for pennies on the dollar.

Have you thought of looking at 'Trademe' (NZ's biggest online auction) they have four 70~200L's on at the moment for around $1000 nzd. Aussies can join Trademe. Just a thought.
WOW! It must nice to be able to pick between a $900 or a $1,500 lens. My specialty is horse photography, and I get by very nicely with a Sigma APO DG 70-300 for about $230 US. In fact, I liked my first one so much, when it fell out of by bag and broke I immediately ordered a new one, even though by that time I could have afforded a more expensive lens.
I have to agree with Dasloaf when he suggests considering the 70-200mm f2.8 for $1200(US) if you don't need image stabilization. Much better for lower light.

There are other brands - Tokina, Sigma, Tamron, etc. Read reviews before you buy - dpreview.com, kenrockwell.com, and others. Here's one:
