Not a great deal there St3v3 but what is there is just fine. Hard to make a single tree shot interesting without being creative after the download but its not unpleasant.
Motel bedroom wall material so it has its place.

Running through the shots and liked this one, but it's a bad download with the rain blurring the image.

Thanks for the input! S-

I'm the odd man out here. I think it is a good photo well composed with good natural color and a great sense of reality.

Thank you! As I remember, it was a jump out of the car, shoot the image, jump back in the car and huddle in the warmth day, but it had to be done and I'm better for it! But really, I stopped to look at the falls in the moving mist of the morning clouds and noticed the stark contrast of the yellow maple tree against the green forest background. There are others in the series, but I like this one the best! Thank you again, S-

What there "is not there" is an extensive tonal spectrum. What you have used well is the restricted tonal spectrum available. That splendid autumn cottonwood (maple?)is a great example of restrained elegance...of "shibumi"...yeah...you know where I'm goin'! Can you verbalized your reaction at the moment of awareness of that scene? Your thought as you raised the viewfinder to your eye?

My story is less with words than with an image, but better than post so I'll give this a try.

Rain poured down as I drove the long narrow into Yosemite Valley, beautiful in its own, but breathtaking was the word of the day as I roamed the valley floor, streams filling, falls coming to life. It was quick hellos and faster still back in the car to make the drive through wonderland.

The intention was to drive to Inspiration Point to see the valley overview in the morning light, but every twist, every turn was a revelation of light and shadow, rain and morning cloud. To say you were in wonder is to say you were breathing, if you remembered to do so as you took it all in.

I remember turning towards Stoneman Meadow, directly across from Curry Village, thinking I'd keep an eye out for the great Yosemite Falls, but something about the light, the color and the tonal contrast of the stark yellow against the mist faded forest drew me in.

Freezing by SoCal standards and dressed as such, it was a quick jaunt out of the dry warmth, back in, and we were off, but I knew I had witnessed something great. To be there at that time, at that moment, and to have seen one of God's glories, I felt truly blessed and it haunts my soul! S-

Steve...
Your narrative suggests that (as do a lot of photographers and other visual artists) you very naturally think in haiku...it is replete with many micro-images-thoughts-phrases that are the bases of haiku.

"streams filling, falls coming to life" ("streams fill and falls surge")
"valley overview in the morning light"...dawn light overview
"revelation of light and shadow" tonal revelation......
", rain and morning cloud."
"Mist-laden Forest"....mist forest....fog forest
"Stark yellow" against dark forest..." "

"To say you were in wonder is to say you were breathing, if you remembered to do so"
Can be re-cast:
"Remember to breath ; it permits wonder" (needed for wonder)
"To breath is to live is to wonder..." "To breath-to live-to wonder" "breath, live, wonder"

"To be there at that time, at that moment, and to have seen one of God's glories,". THAT'S A HAIKU MOMENT if I've ever heard one!

Your recollections are a treasure trove of the raw material of haiku!

Relax...deep breaths...recall...free-flow of thought

Include all essential; eliminate all unessential

More recollections > more haiku fodder!

You are a natural!....as are, I think, a great majority of our number here on UHH in general...and FYC in particular!

Best,
Dave

You did a really nice job of separating the focal point from the background. I like that the tree is essentially the same color of the ground around it. The trees in the mist behind the subject help the image; but they do not interfere with and are separate from the main focal point. this is nicely done. It has a nice atmospheric quality. The information about the photo also gives us reason to venture outside even on rainy days. I like it.

Last summer my wife and I were able to go to Switzerland. That photo was taken on the Aletschgletcher. We took the train (cog railway) to the "top of Europe" and spent a few hours there. The reason I used it as my avator is that it is one of the only shots I have of me. My wife actually took the shot with her point and shoot.

When I first looked at this one, my first thought was- oh, another fall tree shot- big deal. But the more I looked the better it got. The textures ofthe grass, the pines in the background, make the tree more interesting. I like it a lot
