I'm just curious if this group is equally critical! Go ahead, be honest! Hit me with your best shot!
It's best to download this one.

Better late than not at all. I'm thinking critical doesn't really fit here....maybe nit picky at times. I would say honest, supportive, and instructional more fits the group here. In my opinion Peter has hit the bullseye you were looking for. I am an admirer of your surf shots and glad to see you here, hope you will subscribe and continue to participate.

Even though this is in reality a Cropped wedding photo, it is not intended to be in a wedding album. This is a photo of my youngest son's wedding. I was messing around with the photo and zoomed in when it struck me that the image looked pretty cool to me cropped in very tight. To me it is "art". To get a reaction I posted this image on "photo analysis" and as I expected got some very critical responses to it. I'm just curious if this group is equally critical! Go ahead, be honest! Hit me with your best shot!

This is almost like a short story. There is no character development and we don't see the big picture. What we do get are those piercing eyes and we can also tell, although we don't see his eyes, that he is looking down at her adoringly. I like it tight the way you did it. It is much more interesting than the more usual portrait that would end up in the album.

Hi Brent good to see you here. I really like the idea of cropping in close but I don't think it quite works. The pic focusses on the emotion of the moment by reducing the pic down to two key elements, his smile and her eyes. But the emotion in his smile isn't quite there because you have cut the corner of his mouth, I think you needed that final bit of upward curve to fully convey his feelings. She is looking at the camera so her eyes should have impact, we should be able to see how she feels. But both eyes are in shadow and it is her brightly lit nose and forehead which dominate.

As for the question 'wedding or art' to me its a pointless question because in the end the answer doesn't matter. What counts is the image you present, the technical aspects, its impact and do I get what you seem to be trying to convey? In other words does it touch me? The answer to that question this case is not quite, for the reasons I have given, but its not far off.

Don't know whether this counts as a softer answer but it is honest.

Hope this helps.

Peter

Thanks Peter for your thoughts on this image. I truly believe that most viewers of my photographs don't get the same focused energy that I get with them. That's ok with me. Often times I will get responses that I had never considered while viewing the photos.........I like it when that happens. This image for me works as a design element and exersize which I don't think anyone else has really experienced the way I have or the way I intended with the way it was cropped. I looked at the image strictly as shapes, colors and directional lines in a very graphic tunnel view. It seems that most of the viewers immediately recognize the bride and groom and think "wedding" and only wedding. They try to put "feelings" into the image in some way or another. I know that wedding photography is a BIG deal in the photography world and a lot of focus goes into it on many levels. Even my title of "Cropped wedding photo" instantly forces the viewer to think "wedding". Like I said before, I'm an artist first and a photographer second. It helps to have the technical skills with Photoshop and other programs which frees me up to alter or emphasize parts in the image the way I would use a brush on a painting.
Thanks for wanting me in the group. I'm not sure how much time I can devote to this but we will see!

Thanks Frank for wanting me to participate in your group. I feel the love! lol I will admit that surf shots are my favorite subject but I do not want to be typecast like an actor sometimes does. My photos really are all over the board but centered near the beach which I love with a passion.
Quite a while ago I started a thread titled "NOT your typical flower photos". It was kind of like my own protest to all the "typical flower photos" that were being posted on the Hog. The premise was to NOT post "snapshots" but do post some creative shots using FLOWERS as the main topic. The thread took off much more than I ever anticipated. ......so much that I didn't have time to put any more sustained effort into it. There is a core of artist/photographers that have kept that thread alive and I think it's on it's 5th or so volume already. You all should take a look at the creative juices that post on that thread. I think it would inspire you.

Thanks very much ebrunner for the way you have read into this photo and what you take from it. I'm finding that there is something to breaking down an image to the lowest common denominator that is very enjoyable. An old saying goes like this:
Good design is what's left after all irrelevance has been parred away.
