I found a lens that I didn't even remember having. It is a Nikon 70-210 AF 4.5-5.6. It is not the D version.
When I mount it on my D200, it will not automatically focus, and the focus ring can not be moved by hand. The focus ring moves freely when not mounted on the camera. I assume this means there is a problem with the lens and not a compatibility issue?

Set the camera to manual focus and it will release the motor and allow manual focus.
Thanks. I don't know why I didn't think of that.
I also had to set the Mode to Manual, because none of the auto functions are working. Obviously, there is an electronic problem with the lens.

Check the Contact strip on the lens, may be dirty or broken.

I found the problem. I noticed that something rattled when I shook the lens, so I opened it up. At some point, someone had worked on it and left a tiny screw in it. Also the internal ribbon cable has a tear in it from being stressed when the lens was opened. That is the reason for no auto functions.
It took me a while to get everything back together like it was (minus the loose screw), but it still works in full manual mode. As I said before, I don't remember how or when I got the lens, but I know I have never opened it. I don't remember ever using the lens, so I feel pretty sure I didn't purchase it.
In fact this is the first time I've opened any lens. Requires a little patience and precision handling. It obviously requires some care in handling the ribbon cable and making sure the screws go back where they should be. I guess it will go back in the box where I found it since I have trouble throwing things away.

So where did you get the lens ? Did the Lens Fairy leave it under your pillow when you lost a tooth ? BTW I have a good working one and like the IQ of it.
All I know is I acquired it from some source between 1970 and now.

You've got me wondering. Could that be a 4-5.6 instead of 4.5-5.6?
Sorry you're having trouble with yours. I have the AF Nikkor and it's tack sharp and sells for less than $100, but the AF is a little slow without an in-lens motor.
You are correct, it is 4-5.6.
