The D7000 has a few features the D300s doesn't, and vice versa.

One of the biggest differences to me is the 16,2 Megapixel sensor the D7000 has over the 12.3 on the D300s.

Both have dual memory slots, the D7000 has 2 SD's, and the D300s has 1 CF and 1 SD.

The D7000 is the bottom end of the "pro" line of offerings.
The D300s the next step up.
For the price difference between the 2 cameras, I'd opt for the D7000. Or, if you had an idea of what's coming, maybe wait on the new offerings coming.

The D800 is out now, but is still in limited supply. It's almost identical twin the D800E is scheduled for a couple months away yet.

I have the d300s. Got it for the build. It is a little bit better for being out in the weather. And I like the way it felt when I held it. Both are great cameras tho. I have friends that shoot the D7000 and are very happy.

I compared the 2 when I was looking the last time and decided the D7000 was the better camera for the money, have had NO regrets.
I have the D800E on order and expect it in 3 weeks. Just sold my D90 backup body today so the wait is on as I now have only one digital body, I feel half naked!

I have both and really like the D7000. The build seems lighter, but it's a solid machine. The image quality is bit better than the D300s and high ISO noise level is sooo much better if that's something that interests you. 12 to 16 megapixels wasn't a factor for me, they're not that different. Between the two, I'd buy another D7000. I just shot an event tonight- an auction. Really low light. 1600 iso, f 4~5.6 with fill flash, dragged the shutter at about 1/20. They look remarkable.

I am curious about the alleged D400. Sorry- that's gonna be your call.

I have the D300 (no "s")- love it! I was dissatisfied with the D200 and one of the guys at the store I go to suggested the D300 - then new on the market. I said "OK, I'll look at it". Reading about it referred to the D3 also new on the market; reading about the D3 referred to the D300 - back and forth! I could, so I did - I bought both and have not had neither second thought nor regeret as they complinment each other nicely.

I'm surprised you can even find a d300s. I was going to buy one when the street price was in the $1450 range, but decided to wait for the d400 which was rumored for last August. still waiting. this thread might convince me to buy the 7000. wish there were a camera store left in the state so I could get a feel for it.

I have the D300 and the D7000 and the difference is well enough to make me use the D7000 ALL the time. The low noise is excellent, the auto white balance is better on the D7000 compared to the D300 and of course there is the ISO range from 100 on up to 6400 with 2 stops more under the Hi1 and 2 settings which can tke it up to 25,000.

The body is slightly smaller and a tiny bit lighter than the D300 as well but there is nothing wrong with that body and if you want a little larger look and feel then buy a battery grio for it. Also the video quality is excellent on the D7000. And the best part is the price, this is an amazing camera for the price, hands down.

Just go out and biuy it! You will never regret it and it will last you for years.

I have the D300s and love it, mag-aloy body , well sealed, easy to use. I have no prob with noise, even at night.I put a vert batt grip on it and have never looked back.Iam really looking forward to the D4 (not 400)some think the 16 mp's are low, but the pix are larger. While the D800 has 36 mps (?) the reviews say it's tricky to work with so much ie. a high learning curve. Im going with the D4,what a beauty.

I had the D100,then D200 and now the 300s. I like the D7000 but I have to many CF cards so I'll bypass the D7000. Don't know why they went with 2 SD cards anyway.I'm sure the D7000 is a little better.
