How good is this lens?
I bought a used Nikon D7000 recently and have added a - AF-S DX NIKKOR 35mm 1.8 G and a Nikkor 50mm f/1.8D to it. Both of these lenses are producing great images for me. I want to branch out to some sort of zoom lens and though this lens covers what I already have I can get it at a pretty good price and it is in good condition.

Thanks

Try and Google this lens. Ken Rockwell seems to like them:

I like the 24-85mm f/2.8 much better than I did the 28-70mm f/3.5-4.5D I sold.

I got a beautiful 35-70 f/2.8 on ebay for a little over $300. Very nice lens, especially considering the price of the new 28-70.

EDIT: Wow! I see what you mean by a good price.

I've had that lens for years & it's better than one might suspect. I used to use it all the time along with an R72 IR pass filter on my old Nikon D70s...I do have fixed aperture zoom lenses that have since replaced it though.

This lens is a great lens. The other lens options some have mentioned are nice, but they are DX lenses, not full frame.
So they are cheaper.

I had one for about 2 years and just sold mine about two weeks ago because I acquired the 24-70. The only reason I sold it was that I got an excellent deal on the 24-70 and I could use the extra 4 mm for scenic shots. Otherwise, the optics are about the same. Very sharp lens. It is fairly large though.

You can usually get one for 1/2 the price of the 24-70. If you are shooting a DX body, it won't be wide enough for the 28mm to be of much use. It winds up providing you with approx. a normal lens field of view.

I recently got the 24-85 f3.5-4.5 for my D800. Nice light FX walkabout lens. Used new condition under $400. It will work fine on DX also.

I don't need f2.8 much but do have the Sigma f2.8 17-50 on my D5300. It is fabulous. Under $500 new. It is all I take when I travel by air.

Many choices!

I like the 28-70mm f/3.5-4.5D much better than both the 24-85mm f/2.8-4D and the 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5G, both of which I sold. Lots of folks like the 24-85mm lenses but I just couldn't get them to work for me. The 28-70mm for under $100 has got to be the best bargain on the planet.

How good a deal were you able to get on a 24-70 f/2.8? New? It costs around $1800 new?

I would love to own this lens cheaper. Your opinion and experience.

I have that lens and it is very convenient to zoom . The image quality is good. Check compatibility with your camera. I use it on a D800

You've had a bit of hog advise. You do know what your getting in to! It's no good having short arms and deep pockets, your going to have too split that gold bar under the bed to get the 24 to 70 @ 2.8. I have this lens it was worth it for me 👍🏻 but it's a teeth gripper when the credit card bill drops on the carpet 😁😮👍🏻😀

Keep in mind that your D7000 is a DX camera (not full frame). Because the DX body's 1.5 "crop factor," your 35mm is effectively a "normal" 50mm lens and your 50mm is effectively a 75mm short telephoto. So, you currently have no wide angle capability. While an effective 35mm used to be an acceptable wide angle capability, an effective 28mm is now pretty much the minimum standard.

If you buy into that (because Nikon does), with a DX camera, you would need a zoom that goes down to 18mm (27mm effective). There are tons of those DX (Nikons) lenses around: 18-55, 18-70, 18-105, 18-135, 18-140 and 18-200 to name most of them.

Were I you, I'd get a used 18-200mm with VR stabilization. that would give you an effective (DX) zoom range of 27-300mm. My second choice would be the 18-140mm lens.

Good Luck

If the "DX - crop factor" is confusing you, google that and understand it before you buy any lens. This 28-70mm lens you are considering is an effective 42mm at the low (wide angle) end - almost useless.
