Old Guido is said to be the only man who ever entered Parliament with honest intentions. Penny for the Guy?

True, but he kept both factions happy enough to celebrate. One side because he tried, the other because he failed!

Happy Guy Fawkes sounds very peculiar to English ears, no one ever wishes anyone Happy Guy Fawkes.

I think that's American sarcasm at work. Don't take phrases like that literally.

True, but you do hear many variants of the old English folk verse (c.1870): The Fifth of November

Remember, remember!
The fifth of November,
The Gunpowder treason and plot;
I know of no reason
Why the Gunpowder treason
Should ever be forgot!
Guy Fawkes and his companions
Did the scheme contrive,
To blow the King and Parliament
All up alive.
Threescore barrels, laid below,
To prove old England's overthrow.
But, by God's providence, him they catch,
With a dark lantern, lighting a match!
A stick and a stake
For King James's sake!
If you won't give me one,
I'll take two,
The better for me,
And the worse for you.
A rope, a rope, to hang the Pope,
A penn'orth of cheese to choke him,
A pint of beer to wash it down,
And a jolly good fire to burn him.
Holloa, boys! holloa, boys! make the bells ring!
Holloa, boys! holloa boys! God save the King!
Hip, hip, hooor-r-r-ray!

And if lucky a good autumnal misty night, with clear enough skies for a few (well controlled) fireworks and a roaring bonfire!

I think it is going to be very wet across most of the country tonight.

In California we do worry that it isn't raining, and might never do so again!

I grew up on the Atlantic coast area of North Devon, where if you look to the west there is an island called Lundy, after which if you keep going for a while you eventually hit America.

The local saying was: "If you can see Lundy, it's going to rain. If you can't see Lundy, it's already raining!"

North Devon was, when I was young a favourite holiday destination. Woolacombe, Croyde Bay, Clovelly and Westward Ho! Wonderful places.
