Face recognition in Lightroom 6?

Hi,

Is anyone using this feature in LR6?

I'm using LR5 and considering an upgrade, primarily for this feature.... I shoot a lot of sporting events and it might be helpful when sorting and organizing the images in LR.... if it works well.

So I'd be very interested to hear from folks who have used it, if they've found it works well for their purposes.

I want to know how well it works to! I have it in the current update, but have not tried it.

Julianne Kost has a demo on YouTube that shows what it does and how it does it.

I've used it and would say it's a good first try... I don't think it's terribly accurate. I shoot several dog shows a year and plenty of dogs come up with peoples names LOL

I would not classify it as a deal maker, it will be a great feature as it gets improved but right now I'd give it a 5 out of 10.

I found Google's face recognition in Picasa provided significantly better results when I played with that.

You're OK just as long as it doesn't identify your wife as "Rover" or your mother-in-law as "Rin-Tin-Tin"!

The is a plugin for earlier versions of Lightroom that works using picassa face recognition.

http://regex.info/blog/lightroom-goodies/picasa-face-import

also this page about face recognition in lightroom 6 is also interesting

http://regex.info/blog/2015-04-22/2560

Basically you tell picasa to scan your lightroom photo's folder and you tag as normal the import plugin reads picasa database and finds that say img4567.jpg has fred in the picture it then finds img4567.jpg in the lightroom database and adds fred into the keywords wash and repeat its all automatic.

European versions of picasa now have face recognition removed in the latest update, so do not update.

I do a lot of family event photography and I have a really large family so I use the feature a lot. It saves me tons of time with keywording my family members. It gets about 1/2 of them, the other half I have to add manually but that is easy because you just drag the questioned face to the correct face above it on the face recognition panel. It even recognizes my pets!! But like others said, it sometimes labels my family members as inanimate objects or pets!!!

I have used (tried) it and it is interesting. What it really seems to do is this: when you go into a photo and identify a person in the shot, it tries to look at all of your other photos and identify that same person. So, for instance, you have a photo of "Judy" (make sure you use a last name too as this will really confuse the program if you have multiple Judys), Lightroom will go through your library and try to label Judy in every photo she is in. It then creates a database so that you could pull up all photos with Judy in them (even group shots that she is a member of the group. The program works reasonably well and tends to show all of the images of "Judy" that are similar to the initial one. It will show others with question marks after the name Judy if it thinks they are images of her (say a profile shot or a different angle) but it isn't sure. You can then click on it approving the selection, type in a new name or just click unknown.
As to whether it is worthwhile, it depends. If you are a portrait photographer and have many portrait and group shots of the same people or customers and you want to be able to pull all of them up (Say Judy wants a head shot and you have 200 to choose from) it can be really handy. Otherwise, it is just an add on that may never be used or a distraction, especially if the shot of Judy was a onetime shot of a person in another country while you were on vacation and will never be used again. It is a nice feature though and can have some good uses... Similar to the photo mapping in Lightroom Maps that shows where each shot was taken. Nice if you keep it updates as you develop images and want to go back and for instance see all the shots you took at beach in Miami or the Dock in Key West, etc. It can be narrowed down to specific areas on the satellite map to follow a trip down I-95 from New England to Florida for instance.

If I don't recognize the people I'm shooting, why am I shooting them?

Landscape doesn't have many faces.

I use the feature occasionally. I don't think it is as good as Google Photos facial recognition. Like someone else said, I'd rate it 5 out of 10 stars.
Plus, if you do a group shot of a crowd, it will try to identify hundreds of people, no matter how small their faces may be.

I don't use it. I'd rather have the person's name in the keywords than having the software keep up with another list that may miss something, or erroneously choose a value.

I have been using this feature of LR which was a motivator for me to upgrade. I like it, but it does have a way to go in both speed and accuracy. It is, however, helpful and it is a start. I use it for my sports work when that involves younger kids quite a bit. I do look forward to the next few versions of this!
