I would like some good suggestions for a decent monitor (24-27") and tower for doing editing work with LR5. I am not doing any professional work and am only using this system for editing only. I'd like to spend between 800-900 dollars, if it is reasonable to get a decent unit. A friend recommended an Asus monitor - does anyone have any suggestions? Right now I am using my Dell xps laptop which I realize is far from ideal.

Are you completely tied to using a Windows system?

Why is your laptop 'far from ideal?' Maybe start with a good monitor to use with your laptop? Maybe add an external keyboard?

I'm using a Dell Tower as my computer.
And a
32" Samsung monitor.So far, I'm happy as a clam.
Why so big? Well, I have this hutch on my home office desk. And I wanted to fill the backdrop on it.
My thinking was I can shrink down windows if they are too big.
But I can't make them bigger if I don't have the screen real estate.
Speaking of which, the Daughter-in-law does real estate part time, and she loves my giant monitor.
As for your Box-O-Rocks, I always look at the fastest processor, biggest fastest RAM, and biggest fastest hard drive for where I'm jumping in at.
Often, gaming computers lead the pack as far as speed and graphics capabilities go.

I believe the OP is saying his current laptop is unsatisfactory for editing. I use a laptop, granted it is a high end one, without a external monitor. But that is because a lack of room considerations, very small living space.
First shop for the monitor as well as calibration hardware/software. Prepare to spend more money on the monitor than the computer.
