Would you be concerned about buying a used Nikon speedlight (i.e., from reputable dealer on EBay or on Amazon?
I am aware of no "subtle" problems with speedlights. Used cameras and/or used lenses may have hidden problems not obvious at time of purchase. Speedlights are fairly straight forward. They either work, or not.

I got a used Canon speedlite off eBay. It works great. Just look at the sellers' feedback.
I did recently purchase another 600 unit, and can't tell any difference. Frankly, have to look closely to tell which one is the one I bought new and which one is the used one.

Even if it fails sooner than one you bought new, it can be repaired for a reasonable price.
Just make sure that the seller has a return policy. Reputable dealers do.
