What kind of nest
After the leaf fall this nest in our crab apple tree was duscovered. Anyone know whether is hornets, wasps, yellow jackets? Dead after hard frost?
The iPad Air 2 camera pic was heavily cropped.
Nest in tree
Looks like a mud wasp nest that I used to see as a kid.

Looks like paper wasps to me, probably mostly dead now, they can be pretty aggressive. When they nest close to my oriole feeders all the birds stop coming in when the wasps find the grape jelly.

I had a White faced Paper Wasp nest that looked very similar. Mine died off in the winter. They never bothered me but my son crossed their invisible line and they introduced him to some serious pain. Gary
Wasp nest, I took one down from a tree in my front yard, it smelled like a giant dog turd.
We haven't had a hard freeze with a few days below 30 yet, so am gonna hold off on taking down. Do wasps just die or hibernate, they leave spring hatchable eggs.

I probably would wait a bit too. I think most or all are probably dead but I thought the Detroit Lions were gonna win the Super Bowl this year too! Lol!
I think they overwinter by a queen with already fertilized eggs that starts anew colony next year, lucky you!
That is right, the die this fall and the queen starts a new colony in the spring. Any type of bee should not be destroyed unless they are hazard. We need them for pollination as well as the other bees. Each has their specific plants that they pollinate.
Well you could POKE the nest & if any wasps come out they are still alive! If no wasps come out, carefully cut the branch off & trim as needed. Put nest in a plastic bag & seal bag...freeze in freezer all through next Summer. Then spray varnish it & hang in your den or man cave. Wife will love it!
The really curious one would cut it down and take it in a nice warm house for a day or two..... woudnt be long before your question was answered...lol
We call 'em, Hornets. Also call 'em, painful!
That is a bald faced hornets nest. VERY dangerous in the summer months, but cold weather will kill off the occupants eventually. People like to keep the nests but soon find the whole thing is full of rotting larva and will stink for a long time
That is a hornets nest and don't think for a minute they are dead from a frost. If you mess with it you probably will end up in the emergency room.
What I do is to wait until the temp does not go above freezing, then slip a plastic bag over it and toss it into the trashcan.

Here is one that's in use. The bees that you see are called Yellow Jackets. They die off and the nest starts to fall apart in the winter. Click the download....Rich
