I just got my trusty 50D back from a shutter wheel re-repair but discovered some useful information after I sent it in. The first repair was legit with broken cable connections but the re-repair was not. However, I was not charged so no worries other than another 2 lonely weeks without. This problem has been most noted on models 40D through 60D but mention of other models is known.

What I discovered is that when using a battery grip and turning the grip shutter wheel, you can feel the definite clicks on the wheel. If you leave that wheel stuck in mid click your camera shutter wheel is disconnected from use. If you are out and about and your shutter wheel spins with no result, check your grip wheel is not stuck in between clicks. It took a few tries to duplicate the error but I confirmed it to be true.

Also, most camera shop employees and repair people are not aware of this phenomenon. So they will proceed as a normal repair.

Happy shooting. :D

Funny, both my 5DIII and T2i don't have clicks when locking it down. I use Canon BG's only and I have NEVER had an issue.

I think he was referring to the actual shutter wheel which changes the Time Value not the locking wheel that holds the grip to the body.

My apologies...guess I have a shutter button and not a wheel with my rigs...

It should be located on the left side of the shutter button in basically the same location as the camera shutter wheel. As you spin it you should feel the little clicks.

Interesting! I have a T3i with a Canon grip, and I could not replicate that problem. In fact I had to try quite hard to leave the wheel setting in between the click points, but even when I managed that, everything works as expected.

Must be a relatively rare phenomenon.

Took me a bit to recreate it and I've been running 3 of these for years with no problems. Then all of a sudden, out of the darkness, the gremlins came a calling.

Could it be dirty contacts rather than a design issue? No idea, just guessing....

No, it is in the design. Imagine having a vehicle with 2 gear shifts and you slide one half way into 2nd but not quite. Then the other stick shift can't do anything until #1 is finished. It is in the way that the wheel is designed, mid click there is no contact and effectively disables the other wheel.

Ultimately, not a big deal until it happens to you and unknowingly take it in for a hefty repair bill. Mine, fortunately was covered by the initial repair warranty. It wasn't till I googled with the correct search terms that I discovered the problem and fix.

OK, thanks. It appears that the T3i doesn't have that limitation. I understand your analogy, but apparently some other cameras and grips still maintain the connection / communication required to function.

Useful to know. Thank you!

Agree I have two battery grips, one for the T21/T3i and one for the 60D. I could not recreate the issue at all.
