Just curious - what does the newer version offer that's this one lacks? Also, what's the purpose of VR on a lens that's 11 lbs - do some people really hand hold this?

The new version of this lens has the Flourite coating, Electronic Aperture, its a little shorter as well as lighter. This lens sells for $10,299 new, and its upgrade sells for $12,299. In my personal opinion this is a bargain for this lens, I had 3 of them in my rental inventory as they are VERY popular with Pro wildlife photographers that come to Yellowstone. One of these was sold last month to a local renter who had wanted one for a long time. The third will stay in my rental inventory for one more year before cycling out.
As for VR, this lens has "Tripod Mode VR" which is so sensitive that it can counteract mirror slap when tripod mounted. Its actually quite amazing to use.
Thank you - I didn't know that VR for tripods existed.

Nikon actually makes several Pro lenses with "Tripod Mode" and others that are "Tripod Aware", sensing they are on a tripod and reducing the level of VR used.
Sweet lens! Checking piggy bank now!
