Well I am still looking at cameras and a friend of a friend offered me his unused Nikon D80 with 28-80mm and 70-300mm for a very good price--any thoughts on this camera?

When I started, I jumped in with both feet and got the D90. Love it. Check Nikon comparison of D80 and whatever else you may be interested in to see what features are on the diferent cameras. As far as I know, the D80 is pretty nice. Good Luck

why did your friend not use it? all nikon dslrs are of great quality and will provide you with years of shooting pleasure. i shootwith a 1st generation d-100 which is older than a d80 and get great shots. if your friend hasn't used the camera you are basically getting a new camera for cheap.

A reasonably priced D80 will be a good starter camera. Eventually, when more advanced features catch your fancy, the D80 will make a great second camera. My D5000 is dedicated to my field macro set-up, and my D90 handles all other photo situations.

My other half is now learning on the D80. My primary camera is a D700.
