Cosina 24mm f/2.8 Macro lens

Bear with me please, macro is a new area for me. I bought the above lens on eBay. First thing I noticed was that the aperture ring moved smoothly: no "click" feeling. Put it on my D7100 set to manual and it was like the aperture ring was spring loaded. It returned to f/2.8, and I had to hold it to a different aperture. So I thought "that was a waste" not worth returning.

So today I put it on a D5100, and the ring remained loose, so I could set the aperture. Weird? Or am I missing something really basic?

does it have a pin that needs to be activated by the camera?

Hi Oldtigger:I looked for a pin or equivalent, but didn't see one. There is a tab on the mount that won't move, and one screw that seems a little raised. I'm happy that it's usable with the 5100. Thanks for review, I'm pleased with the rating. And thanks for the response.

24mm puts you right on top of your subject. I suspect that this isn't a true flat field macro lens, but just a close focusing lens. I've never heard of the brand thus I suspect it was made by an older 3rd party vendor & simply branded with that name. Some people remove the detent ball in order to use a lens when doing video. On a D5100, the aperture is controlled by the camera butt if there is no "detent", i suspect it may not give you a correct exposure. Did you try taking images with it ?. Were they properly exposed ?

Hi Scott:

it won't let me set aperture in camera. It just says "no lens detected"; however, I can set it on the lens.... it's just loose. Exposure is OK in manual mode. Yes, I do believe it is an older lens. It's branded "Cosina", not as my bad typing previously described it.

Kinda sounds like you may have a lens that's set up for video.

True, but there's no lock on this one, and even when I close it down, the camera "doesn't recognize it" so I can't use aperture setting in camera.

FWIW:
The Cosina 24mm f/2.8 was manufactured in the mid-80s by Cosina, and sold under various brand names: Cosina, Vivitar, Exacta, et al. As Scott wrote, it's not really a macro lens, but it focuses really close for a wide angle.

Brassy bunch they were printing the word "macro" and 1:1 on the thing.
