The GOP's dysfunction did not start nor end with Sarah Palin unless one is a Palinaphobe. It started with the assumption that capitulation with the left, such as the McCain attempting to reach across the isle syndrome, will buy favor and compromise with a party bent on fundamentally changing what made this country the last best place on earth would be possible. Couple this with the propaganda machine of the main stream media and you have a prescription for failure and the resulting mayhem.
Sarah Palin is your red herring. The GOP met the enemy and the enemy was/is them. For example....

I don't know, the sheer comedy value in the specter of a Palin presidency almost would have been worth the risk. The unceasing and record breaking level of collective laughter around the world that would have broken out might have even caused some kind of species-wide health benefit.
