first track meet next week
I got my first track meet in a week. I know i got one shot putter to get pictures of an a 2 miler. any help on pics?
Any hints for getting the best out out of my 7d with 70-200mm f2.8 lens?
Just a couple of suggestions: On the distance runner, position yourself at the outside of the first curve. Gives you more opportunities because you can get the runner in three different types of strides -- straight/pre-curve, stretching strike in the curve and straightening out. And watch their feet. As for the thrower, watch his/her warm up and see where his/her face ends up. Then during the competition, you will know where to anticipate the moment just before the big throw.
Squat down for both.

Al Servo auto focus and fast shutter speed....fast enough to freeze the feet & hands while running.
Looking forward to seeing images!!!

Edit:
Realized, Shotput thrower!
I would think down range and try to get the thrower as they release......Don't they spin at least half turn to throw?
Watch the other photogs for ideas.

Today is the day. My first track meet! All I can say is the Astronaut Prayer, Please Lord, don't let me, poop the chute!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Good luck. Have fun. Get a schedule when you first get there. All track meets are in a specific sequential order, with qualifying heats and then advanced competitions. Without that little piece of paper, I would have had NO idea where/what/when. :-) I have some shots from some state-level events if you would like to see what I did with runners and throwers.
awesome, any pics for ideas. The kids are expecting good pics just like the football, softball and basketball team gets!
I felt like a lost puppy tonight. half the field events weren't held, no hurdles and not enough space to take pictures from vantage spots for events. posting some later!
Here are a few of the ones I shot. Sorry they're so grainy.
My first track pics! It was a nice day but the sun was setting and the trees threw shadows on the shot put ring. I like the long jump pics. Have to try different angles for running events!
Whew! You did it! Nice job. I like them all but especially the off-the-block relay guy and the sun flare distance runner. My favorite, by far, is the relay kid in the corner. Can just feel the concentration and his stride is great. The neon Nike swoosh draws the eye to his feet which is so important in running.
What I like about the last one is that you see every muscle in his body ripple while he runs. The muscle cuts looked awesome!
My first track shots of the year.
awesome, camera, lens and settings?
