I love doing night photography. I believe I can only get up to a 30sec. shutter with my T2i. Is there a way to extend shutter speed?

Using the BULB setting allows you to leave the shutter open for as long as you like. A remote (wired or wireless) shutter release makes it a lot easier than holding the button down on the camera for 15 minutes.. :)

It probably toggles (my D40 does) - hit once to open shutter and a second time to close it. Remote is essential; not because you have to hold anything, but to prevent vibration.

And a remote will have longer times available than the body itself.

I'm trying to set the shutter to bulb but I can't find the setting. Any help here. Once again the camera is a T2i.

It's not usually a special setting. It's probably the next slowest speed after 30". Anything in the manual about it?

You need to be in (M) manual mode.

Use the thumbwheel to advance the shutter to "30" - the next choice should be "B" for BULB mode. Press the shutter. Not sure if the XTi has the "one-two" press or not, I always used a remote release.

Page 84 of your user manual. Bulb mode.

A cable release will help take shots with less blur, but you can also use the cable and Canon EOS software that came in the box to control your camera for free from a laptop.

Go to Amazon, etc and look for an Intervalometer. I have one by "Shoot" - others similar by Neewer. About $20, and a good thing to have anyway. JUST MAKE SURE you get the one with the right connector end on it !!! I think there are TWO different connectors used by Canon - one is like an earphone connector with 3 bands on it. The other is a little triangular plug with 3 pin connectors at the end.
.
What are you shooting that needs more than 30 sec ? Certainly not stars - as you'll get star trails even in 30 sec unless you have a clock drive mount.

Also, if your camera supports the feature, use mirror up, or, delayed exposure. It will help to eliminate camera shake when you're in long exposures times.
