Just got a decent deal on Craigslist.. or did I?

I bought a used Nikon N50 Film Camera with an AF 35-80mm f 4-5.6 nikkor lens for $60.

I know the lens is compatible with my D3100 in manual mode, has anyone used this lens? I already re-listed the body of the camera on Craigslist for $50. I am also thinking of just keeping it to experiment.

Any experiences with this lens, or the N50?

My son uses the 35-80 as the main lens for the F90 (aka N90 in US). It's not great but works well enough. I don't remember what I paid for the lens but got it a couple years ago when I only had the 50/1.8 for film.

The F/N50 was an entry-level AF SLR.

I see the lens itself is going for $50-75 on ebay. Is it worth even keeping? I'm not sure how it will perform on my crop sensored camera..

It would be the equivalent as a 70-120, but you won't have autofocus on a D3100.

It becomes a 52-120mm manual focus lens on your body. It was the "kit lens" of its day, but its day is pretty much gone. The ones you see on Ebay are usually a "But it now" price, or starting price for bids. Not very many of those actually SELL, but some do. If its in good condition they shoot well on regular Nikon DSLRs that can use its AF feature, but the AF is first generation and is really slow compared to todays lenses.
Is it useable? Definitely.
Is it desireable? Not very.

Oops - fat fingered that one.

OP - I agree - it would work, but you can do much better. In our case, it is serving a student shooting film and will eventually be retired.

Oh man, There is 60 down the drain. I guess I'll just buy a film and experiment then try to resell it. If not, I have an extra lens I can throw on there if i'm in tough conditions like sand or rain..?

Look at it like will you get $60 worth of fun out of using it, even if it is over a long time. Then it was well worth it. What else can you spend $60 on have have fun with. Maybe go to the show a few times....
