Premium airline seating?

Next year I will be going on Delta to Israel for 2 weeks (vacation) and am considering whether or not, on the return flight, to get one of their extra charge seats. It's a 12-hour flight and will be in the daytime vs an overnight flight on the way there. I've never bought a premium seat on an airliner before and am wondering what other people's experiences were. They promise more legroom, premium snacks and free beer and wine. It's an extra $139 per segment, though. I could think of lots to do with that money, but I'd kinda like to try it just once. It'd add between 3-4% to the cost of the trip.

I've flown from Nebraska to South Africa through London (about 10-12 hours per leg), and from Nebraska to Beijing through Chicago (14 hours each way). Get the extra room if you can. I'm 6'1" and 220 lbs, and it was tough, especially the Beijing flights.

Money well spent for comfort. You will like the extra leg room alone.

Question -- is it more important to feel your best when you get there, and want to start doing things, or when you get home and can rest up? Just thinkin'.

I did, actually. On the way over, I'd probably be asleep for several hours (unless I'd be too excited to sleep, which is a distinct possibility), but with it being an overnight flight (1600-0950 the next day) most everyone else would probably be asleep anyways and the cabin would be darkened. As long as the seat is comfortable enough to rest, I should be OK. About 1/2 way through the trip I'll get a few more gray hairs and a comfy seat and free wine would just be icing on an already nice (but pricey) birthday cake. And with the flight back to JFK being, theoretically, an hour and 9 minutes longer, at 11 hrs 59 minutes, I'd have more time to enjoy the extra room and booze :). Does that make sense? This will be, to date, my longest (#of days), farthest (distance), and most expensive trip yet.

I think all international flights offer free beer and wine. If you're going to take advantage of this then I would select a seat near the restrooms and not worry about leg room.

I just checked..complimentary alcoholic beverages on most long haul international flights (hadn't been on one in 15 yrs, so i forgot), but I'd have to purchase headphones if I wanted to. Delta Comfort offers premium entertainment, free earbuds, better snacks, 4" more legroom, priority boarding and on long haul flights, recline 50% more.

First time I flew overseas --comparatively short flight -- East Coast to England, at night, I was wide awake the whole time. Subsequent flights no problem. Its all how you feel when you get there.
Have a great time -- stay alert, they're having some troubles right now.

One of the things that will really affect how you feel when you get there is alcohol. Even a moderate amount can make you feel like a zombie when you get off the plane. Keep hydrated, but alcohol-free, and arrive ready to enjoy life.

I know they are having trouble now...my mom won't stop reminding me. She thinks I should find a more 'stable' place to vacation (my word choice), but according to the latest data from the UN (2012 or 13), Israel's homicide rate is substantially less than the US, even when considering the Palestinian conflict. For all I know, St. Louis, by itself is a more dangerous place than the entire country of Israel!! (they recently eclipsed last year's full total...last I heard it was up to 160...and that was several days ago. Besides, I don't leave for another 227 days.
