Why Do Some People Steal Other's Artwork?

In the past on many different sites of the WWW, I have had a number of my photographs taken and used for a number of reasons.
Sometimes it is from another photographer (Well - "Would Be" Photographer - that is).
So.... To Off-Set that activity and to show that This Is My Work = I have place a "watermark" on all of the work I present to the general public. On my business pages I have written below (or somewhere - like the Album Heading) I state that I do not include the "watermark" in any of the work that the client would wish to buy.

AND I know that a few "clever" people can remove the watermark to have a usable Printable photo from it.

One "friend" on Facebook said that I have really good photographs .... But that my "watermark" was very distracting. So I took down the opacity. She still said it was "annoying". And that the physical size was too small..... Yeah! - Right!! Now I know what she wanted to do.... She wanted to make a print from it for her-own. Well!!! Sorry THAT is Not going to happen. (I wrote her in a private live chat thing). I was making use a UPPER-CASE letters here and there as to make emphasis on my meaning of the wording. She mistaken that for YELLING at here..... Oh for Christ's sake...... I do THAT all the time.

Well..... I was wondering just how many other photographers have had their material stolen, or used without their permission on different sites. I do know that it is a "thing" that is done all the time on the "WWW" - and that there is really no way around it.

I have seen Peter Lik's material used by others on Facebook, and I reported that to Mr. Lik. I do not know if he read the post I put up on his site... Perhaps one of his assistants did.

ANYHOW....

Here is what I post as a jpg....

Physical size is that of Nothing Over 8"X12".

Nothing Over 150 D.P.I.

Nothing Over 400 mb.

And always with my watermark on it.

We differ on our approach to the problem:
Physical size is that of Nothing Over 8"X12". (size doesn't matter)
Nothing Over 150 D.P.I. (DPI doesn't matter)
Nothing Over 400 mb. (I try not to post at less than 9.5 mb)
And always with my watermark on it. (I never watermark, it ruins the picture)
BUT:
I never post anything of commercial value. Problem solved.

I am either
A. Not good enough that anyone wants my images or
B. Not smart enough to know any have been pilfered.

I don't watermark but I don't post images larger than 1200 longest side. And I don't have a very public online presence.

I was a little shocked last year when a troubled soul on UHH created an entire sales site with images stolen off UHH. I'm over trusting perhaps.

Hundreds of times. I found it unpleasant, time-consuming, and unrewarding to chase them all down. My approach now is to try not to think about it. (I am not recommending that anyone else take that approach.)

Along those lines, by posting here, we surrender our rights to our photographs.

"By making a submission, Visitor grants the administration and the owners of the Website a worldwide, non-exclusive, irrevocable, royalty-free, sub-licenseable and transferable license to use in any way, reproduce and distribute the submission and prepare derivative works of the submission without further permission. This includes commercial and non-commercial use of all submissions, including portions thereof, graphics contained thereon, or any of the content of the submission. Visitor agrees to only communicate that information to the Website, which it wishes to forever allow the Website to use in any manner as it sees fit."

The wonderful thing about the web is the freedom of information exchange it gives us. That includes images.
Make em small watermark em be flattered but get your head around the fact their is nothing you can do to stop it.
Accept the net for what is is. For many its a free source of music art and computer programs. If Adobe cannot stop you stealing their software then sure as hell their is no way to stop those who are inclined to steal your pictures.
Theft started with an appple from a tree some believe and you and I will never cure humans of the something for nothing urge.
Sent to you from a laptop with a pirated operating system!!!

There was a guy on this very site for a while and I find I cannot think of his name...but his theft from this site to sell on another was quite the uproar. He was ultimately banished.
I take it you have not taken the time to read the terms of agreement on facebook, since if you did you would understand that you gave up your exclusive rights to those images by posting there.

Yes... I know that -- Still it is a sad thing.

Most of my work is Landscapes... Most if not all = Looks best on a large print.... 13X19 or larger... i.e.= 40X60.

Yes. That guy was brazen, wasn't he? If I am not mistaken, several members stopped posting after that.

Brazen but a very troubled soul. I worried for his health and survival.

I wish to thank, minniev, for here inviting me to this "segment" of the UHH... I really like the truthful replies to my questions thus-so-far. And I Always like the truth no matter what others may think that "they" (who-so-ever) might hurt my feelings. I have been always that way.
I only wish honesty from "who-so-ever".
Thank you one and all. I shall keep this up and going for as long as everyone here wants to reply.
I do have a thick skin on me from years gone by.

I wish everyone here the best and If I May be of help with anything photographic - Please let me know.

James..
