How can you ensure to keep your copyright on personal photographs appearing online through sites such as this one, Facebook or other widely diffused site?

The best way to make sure you photo is not put everywhere is to simply not post it. Otherwise put your name on it or an ugly watermark.

Short answer, you CANNOT. If you post it to the web, you have given it to the world. Copyright notices can be disregarded, and watermarks can be removed. How are you going to know if someone in East Slobovia has stolen your picture? And if you knew, what could you do about? Here in the U. S., pursuing a case of copyright infringement is an expensive proposition, as the case must be brought in Federal court. Unless your photos are registered with the Copyright Office of the Library of Congress, you cannot recover legal fees or assess punitive damages.

Why do you care? If they are something you don't want to share don't post it. Are they so good that you think you will make money off them? As stated it costs a mint to inforce a copyright and unless you can prove yiou are losing money all you will get if you win is that they will be ordered to withdraw the photos. So just post what you want to share and enjoy haveing others see your work. Dave

The attorney costs, if you could find one to take your case
would be outrageous. Questions regarding this subject were pounded out several weeks ago here. Think really what it boiled down to was that it was an extremely large bandage for such a small wound.

Thanks guys and thanks to Carolyn E. Wright! This is good information regardless of nay-Sayers view that no protection is possible. Much appreciated input!

Thank you for the best laugh that I have had in a very long time! Laughed so hard when I read this, it scared my wife and woke up my dog. . .
