Computer crash

Upon opening my computer, up popped a visual saying I needed to update my free AVG antiviral. So I proceeded to do so. I then restarted the computer as suggested. When it came back on it was blue screen. So I did it again and the same results were had. So I decided to log off for a while and see if that would correct the problem. Same results. So I was going to call Costco concierge to fix the problem. Costco=good service. While I was looking for the number the computer came up. I guess I did not wait long enough before but it seemed forever.

The office with which I used to consult used AVG for quite some time. It became so bloated that it literally slowed the computer systems. We switched to MSE. No problems after that.

Try Avast anti virus - it uses a lot less resources than AVG. There is a free version. I have the paid version which does quite a bit more.

I also use the free version AVG antiviral on my old LapTop. What version of Windows are you using? My system will run slow but will eventually boot up after getting an update to AVG. Configuration takes a while. But I don't get a Blue Screen from that, though it might be one of the causes. When I do get a blue screen it is usually after a heat related crash. And from the Blue Screen I'll run a Windows repair application built into Windows Vista. So far I have not had any issues with my wife's new Dell PC also from Costco running Windows 7 Pro.

I use Windows 7 pro. Thanks. Right now it is working but if I have any further problems I WILL try some of the other programs suggested. I have used AVG for years now and never been a problem before, though.

My girlfriend's old DELL laptop was running Windows Vista and AVG. It was about as fast as a snail on Valium. Got rid of Vista and AVG and did a clean install of Windows 7, but this time no AVG. All is well now. I'm very careful to not allow her to download and install anything she surely doesn't need. Glad that my computer is a Mac.

It can take time. Just look at Kaitlyn Jenner - it took him several years to reconfigure himself! :) :)

FYI: Learn to restart your computer in "Safe Mode". Often you have to hold the F8 key while you reboot, but systems vary. Safe mode starts up with only necessary programs. If this happens again, you gain go into safe mode and do a "system restore" to a recent restore point before the last program change you made. This will often fix the problem. Sometimes with viruses you cannot open your antivirus, but if you reboot in Safe Mode you can run the antivirus program.

Thanks for the computer tip.
As for Kaitlin Jenner all that is is a form of self mutilation. It is still not a woman. Never will be no matter how much surgery it has done.

Computers is my biz.... 25 years fixing and teaching at the local CC. Small biz networks also in the community.

Just did my second Windows 10 Demo class at the college yesterday. Been using 10 full time since March in the Insider Program. Ten of my own computers upgraded to 10 at this time. Amazing success.

Use to refer to AVG.... It wore out it's welcome about five years ago. They always do. No AV software stays on top long. Yes on Avast for the moment.

However, If you are running windows 7, MSSE (Microsoft Security Essentials) is my current favorite. AV only, and I found it to find a lot of stuff AVG and Avast wouldn't catch.

No Suites for me. MSSE for 7 (free) and Malwarebytes ($24.95)

Never run more than one AV concurrently real time.

Malwarebytes free is manual scan, Malwarebytes ($24.95) runs real-time scan and catches stuff coming in.

ONLY download MSSE from Microsoft.. (the smaller file is 32 bit, the larger 64 bit).

Only download Malwarebytes from the publisher site... Malwarebytes.org.

In fact, you should never download any software from anything other than a publisher site. Never any third party "downloader" site.

Good luck. Time to blow off AVG.

Windows 8 8.1 and 10 have Windows Defender embedded and no other AV software is required. I still use the paid version of Malwarebytes however.
